Christmas End of Term Assembly

Christmas End of Term Assembly

(1)
This assembly uses humour to appeal to secondary age students and reiterate that Christmas does not have to mean not looking at your study books for 2-3 weeks. This assembly is one that stays in students’ memories and resonates with them for a long time afterwards. The resource comes with a complete script and the powerpoint is fully animated to ensure that the visuals match the presentation. This is an assembly that my students loved and laughed about for a long time after first presenting this. WARNING: DO NOT SHOW THIS TO ANY YEAR GROUP WHO MIGHT STILL BELIEVE IN SANTA! :-)

GCSE (9-1) Conflict Poetry: Partition by Sujata Bhatt (OCR/Unseen)

(1)
This fully differentiated and detailed resource takes students through the context, form, language and structure in a clear, effective and engaging way. This resource would suit teaching for GCSE poetry anthologies or as a guide to approaching Unseen Poetry and would work for both KS3 students and KS4. Contextual links make this particularly relevant to teaching in Black History Week. There is everything here to secure an excellent grade on this poem that features in the new GCSE (9-1) specifications.

This has been created with the Holocaust Memorial Day (27th January) in mind, although it could be used as a supply activity, revision resource, or recap for Unseen Poetry to get students re-engaged with this part of their exams. This is also available as part of a Bundle with an Assembly and a Reading Paper in my shop.

19th Century Fiction Paper including Mark Scheme and Indicative Content: Lost Hearts by M R James

(0)
With few revision papers available for use this is another 19th Century Fiction Paper based on the novel 'Lost Hearts' by M R James. the resource includes a mark scheme and indicative content. This extract is a ghostly tale and a good one to use for analysis of tension/setting rather than characterisation. This is a very accessible paper and would be useful practise for both KS3 students doing a 'Supernatural' Unit of work or for KS4 lower ability to build confidence.
Macbeth Revision Quiz
The_English_TutorThe_English_Tutor

Macbeth Revision Quiz

(0)
This is so much more than a quiz, it asks questions but also answers them in detail, using PEE paragraphs, full explanations and text references. The questions include challenges relating to language, structure and context and conclude with a 'big question' before offering guidance on how to respond to the question (which links to some of the prior questions) and essentially a homework task. This powerpoint is heavily differentiated using images and bonus questions to support and stretch. If a student has not 'got' this text, this powerpoint should go a long way to filling gaps. If you find this useful please do leave a review. If interested in a marking service for the resulting essays please contact me on Twitter @jomarsh1 as this is also available, subject to demand. KS5: Essays: How to write them

(0)
This lesson offers KS5 students a step by step guide to how to approach an essay question and respond to it cogently and effectively ensuring their response is focused and supported. I created this lesson in response to students saying they knew their texts, but weren't sure how to construct them, their written style improved dramatically after delivering this lesson.
IGCSE/GCSE: The Tyger by William Blake (includes essay writing skills)

IGCSE/GCSE: The Tyger by William Blake (includes essay writing skills)

(0)
This bespoke resource on Blake’s The Tyger is designed for use with the Edexcel IGCSE curriculum but is equally useful in teaching Unseen Poetry skills required across all of the IGCSE and GCSE English specifications. These resources are designed for a low/middle ability group and as such are highly supported and differentiated. Challenge/extension tasks are included here and every step of the process is checked for understanding, reinforced and modelled to ensure all students make maximum progress. Tasks include individual work, paired work, whole group work and peer ‘teaching’ (at a low level, but is designed to encourage students to become independent learners). My students enjoyed the variety of tasks included here and I could really see progress in terms of being prepared to ‘try’ out plausible answers based on this poem. I hope your students take as much from this resource as mine did! This lesson draws on a wide variety of teaching strategies to engage and focus students with how to analyse poetry. These skills in turn can be used for analysing Unseen Poetry. This lesson is fully differentiated, from learning objectives, to tasks and to outcome plenary. This lesson should take between 2-3 hours to teach and includes a task that crosses over into Imaginative Writing for the Language Paper. I have taught this lesson a number of times and my students always enjoy the ‘finding the answer’ style of this lesson a lot of fun! If you like this, then you’ll love my other Conflict Poetry resources in my Shop.
