Imperfect tense healthy living gapfill

(2)
Gapfill activity to consolidate imperfect tense (with contrast with present tense). This version is the one with clues (first letter of some words) for less able, but can be deleted to make it more challenging. Part of healthy living topic - used whilst preparing for writing a problem page letter.

Le week-end dernier - text on perfect tense

(10)
A simple reading task to introduce the perfect tense with Year 8. Pupils use their existing knowledge of verbs in the present tense/infinitive to identify the meaning of past tense verbs in the text, leading to a discussion of how the perfect tense is formed. Aimed at Y8 pupils, alongside Expo 2, Module 2 but could easily be used with weak Y9s too.

Reading activity - lunch

(1)
3 different tasks so includes extension work for more able. Texts about what people eat for lunch and why, focusing on reasons for eating at canteen/sandwiches/home - can link in with cultural aspects about school meals in France. Task 1 - very basic, vocab recognition. Task 2 - comprehension. Task 3 - identifying reasons/arguments for and against.

French perfect tense revision quiz

Pupils had covered perfect tense during module on hobbies/leisure in the previous term but had had a bit of a break from it. Used quiz to get them thinking about it again and prepare to apply it to the current topic. Could use to test how much they remember, or let them use their exercise books (opportunity for them to evaluate how good their note-taking is and if their books will help them revise).

Reading task - home and leisure

(2)
Reading task aimed at a middle ability Y8 group who have been doing Spanish once per week since September but are in their 2nd year learning French. In the topic of house/home, this was their 2nd lesson on infinitives so I threw this at them as a bit of a challenge.

French tenses guide

(4)
Reference material for high ability KS4 groups. I am giving this to my groups quite early on and teaching them to use the verb tables in the middle of the dictionary. So whilst at the moment they haven't covered the imperfect or conditional in much detail (and haven't done the A* tenses at all) some should be able to use their initiative and go beyond what they have been taught, with this guide to help them.

Le petit dejeuner - Reading

(1)
Reading task based on Expo 2 Vert p62 but extended (I have added an extra text and broken down the activities more). \n\nThis is for a low ability group so begins with the basics - recognising food words they have done and underlining them.\nThen they have to identify which person mentions which foods, and there are some extension questions for the more able in the group to move onto.

Simple future tense - Qué deporte harás? - Kerboodle F p.58

(4)
Lesson to introduce the simple future tense to mid/low ability Y10 (who had only done immediate future in KS3). To do the listening, you need to have Kerboodle. I have added a gapfill activity to exploit the Kerboodle sound file in a different way. Differentiated lesson. Most able - range of subjects, some si clauses with set sentence openers Least able - 1st person (other subjects with support).

Then becomes sheet for recording vocab - go through answers on powerpoint and pupils fill in gaps.

Reading task - illness and reasons - past tense

Reading task to revise the perfect tense with Y9 after teaching illness with 'j'ai mal au...'. Pupils match 2 halves of sentences and work out which illness would result from which activity. As extension, I set 'find the French' on various time phrases and connectives used in the speech bubbles.

Hand out grids - pupils mustn't show partner. Use question 'Qu&'est-ce que ton pere/ta mere fait dans la vie?' and answer with 'il/elle est...' based on grid. When finished, compare grids in pairs to check answers.
