Charlotte's Web Planning, Powerpoint and Resources

Planning for 10 lessons, I allow for at least 3 weeks to get through it. This resource includes the planning, the Powerpoint (also as PDF) and the templates for character and scene description, newspaper report and their own basic plan for their story. Other ideas include a book cover design and event poster.

Instruction Writing to make a Card or Paper Box (DT links)

This lesson requires the children to put photographs in order of the instructions, and then write the instruction that they think goes with the picture together as a class. The children make the box based on the pictures and then write their own instructions based on what they have made. As a plenary, the class can textmark the features from an example given. Recount Writing Roman Celt Boudicca Rebellion

This powerpoint guides the children through writing a recount from the perspective of a Celt warrior. Some additional teaching may be required on the rebellion, although the BBC page on Roman Rebellion (in Primary History) is very helpful. This resource lists the features of a recount and provides a short example for text-marking opportunities. Thanks for looking! Ancient Greeks Non-Fiction Revision

These are the resources I used at the end of the year in my Topic lessons to revise non-fiction text types before the tests. Make sure the persuasion text lesson is taught before the recount lesson. If looking for inspiration, for discussion texts I asked the children to write about whether it was better to grow up in Athens or Sparta, but I used a resource by someone else. Thanks for looking! Instruction Text Writing: Olympic Torch

This powerpoint guides children through writing their own instructions. First, there is a list of features, then the class use these features to text mark the example (How to make a paper plate mask). Children are then given a few minutes to make their own Olympic torches before they write instructions for them. The lesson concludes with text-marking an example. Thanks for looking! Non-Chronological Report Writing Dressed for the Weather

I used this lesson for a Year 3 class on non-chronological report writing. The children used subheadings for their paragraphs on contrasting weather environments and what would be appropriate to wear in each. This lesson worked really well because they did not need to do any further research before writing, which meant that we could focus on the features of a non-chronological report. Thanks for looking! Ancient Greek Mythical Monster Report

Ancient Greek Mythical Monster Report

(1)
We used this lesson to write non-chronological reports about Greek monsters. Children choose which monsters they want to research and must find out five facts about each one. My lowest ability only managed two monsters in the time, whereas the top ability could find out, and draw very detailed sketches of, four monsters. The children drew their creatures on plain A6 paper and then cut around them and stuck them onto their reports. (Some additional teaching will be required on note-taking and then turning those notes back into paragraphs) Thanks for looking! Sound - Measuring pitch and making instruments

Two worksheets for Year 4 Science lessons on Sound. The first is after children had made their own junk model instruments (mostly tissue box guitars and yoghurt pot rice shakers). The second is for much further along in the unit on pitch and frequency, and what different animals can hear. Thanks for looking! Symmetry - Differentiated Patterns

I used these worksheets in Year 4 and the children moved through them at their own pace during the lesson starting with the first sheet. The third activity is quite difficult (two examples in the picture) so even the most able might need to start with the second sheet first. The last sheet is just blank for the children to fill in for each other in pairs if they've blasted through the other three! Thanks for looking! Problem Solving Maths Day

Problem Solving Maths Day

(0)
This activity was used for a Key Stage 2 Problem Solving day. The clues were printed and laminated and hidden all over the school. The children had to find the clues, answer the question (in mixed year group teams) and use their answers to work out the letters (the answer is 'If you can solve this you can have one housepoint each'). Some of the questions are quite difficult to challenge the Year 6s. Thanks for looking! Ancient Greeks Recount Writing (Dionysus or Ariadne)

(0)
This lesson can be used in either English or Topic when learning about Ancient Greece or myths. Once children have learned about Theseus and the Minotaur, this lesson guides the children through what happened next using weblinks for Mr Donn. The children write a recount from either the perspective of Dionysus (and the pirates) or Ariadne (being deserted on the island) up to when Dionysus finds Ariadne and asks her to marry him. Mothers Day Assembly: Mums Making History

Mothers Day Assembly: Mums Making History

(0)
This was a class assembly performed by 5 children (When we performed it, 1 and 2 were confident girls, 3 was a girl with speech difficulties and 4 and 5 were boys) about Mums that have made history. The children researched Anna Jarvis, Marie Curie, Emmeline Pankhurst, Jessica Ennis, Tanni Grey-Thompson and JK Rowling for their homework and I wrote this assembly piece to show the rest of the school what we had been learning about. Advent Calendar with Bible Verses 2017

Each school day of December before the Christmas holidays, click on the date and read the next part of the Christmas story from the Bible. I used this at the beginning of every day in December (in a Christian school) and we discussed the meaning of the verses. There are no numbers for the weekend dates, only the school dates. Not all verses are from the same book of the Bible but are in the correct order for the story! Thanks for looking! Design Shop Front (From Blank)

This resource was originally used for a Key Stage 2 design after-school club, but could be used for older children also. There is space to design the shop windows, the signage, a shopping bag and also a sale tag. The pupils created their own shop 'brand' (most related to things they already like, such as sweets, Pokemon, Shopkins and Smiggle) and enjoyed having several attempts at creating the shop from their imaginations. Design Technology Research and Design Project: Sandwich Boxes

(0)
A four-lesson unit (although lesson 3 where the children create their boxes took two lessons!) to research, design, create and evaluate their sandwich boxes. The final box design itself is as the resource file picture shows, not triangular, but contains photographic steps for the children to follow. I used this lesson unit with a mixed Year 3/4 class (who got very into it), but have made these boxes with Year 5 before as well. This unit does not include actually making the sandwiches, but that could be included also. Thanks for looking! Tudors: Make Me a Monarch! (Persuasive Writing)

(0)
This lesson requires the pupils to fill in an application form to become a Tudor Monarch. The planning and task-setting powerpoint are included, and give examples of interests and skills of the monarchs, as well as a few instruments and sports of the time. I taught this lesson to a mixed 3/4 class during History, but after they had already looked at persuasive writing. This isn't essential, but there are a list of logical connectives for the more able children to use. Thanks for looking! Discussion Writing Uniform or Free Choice

Children think about whether they would rather wear uniform or their home clothes to school in this lesson. After thinking of reasons for each side of the argument the Powerpoint guides the children through writing a discussion text on the subject. Planning using objectives from the Year 4 English Curriculum included. Thanks for looking! Discussion Writing: School or Home School

This Powerpoint guides children through writing a discussion text. The children will be given opportunity to discuss the 'for's and 'against's school and home-school before writing a discussion text on the subject. The planning contains objectives from the 2014 Year 4 English Curriculum. Thanks for looking! Persuasive letter writing: Dear Headteacher, Save our playtimes

(0)
This powerpoint guides the children to write a persuasive letter to the headteacher to save their playtime. The powerpoint starts with a nasty letter to the headteacher trying to argue for shorter breaks. The children must discuss how they will put their side of the argument across for playtimes being essential. Includes features of persuasion and provides a simple structure for writing which can be displayed on the board. The plenary slide includes a sample letter to check for features and suggest improvements. Now also includes planning. I used this with a Year 4 class (some were very concerned that their playtimes might actually be taken away!) Thanks for looking!
