Please read the Terms of Use. My students really like this kind of grammar activity, as they like to work and learn independently, which is a successful way of varying teaching and learning methodologies - I’ve found it’s really important to avoid predominantly teacher-led learning in the languages classroom. French reflexive verbs can be quite tricky, particularly for students whose first language does not have a similar reflexive verb group. The workbooks focus on formation and conjugation, rather than usage, though it’s definitely useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb formation and conjugation. Language learners do often try to conflate what they know about grammar in their first language with the grammar of the language they are learning, and students whose first language is English often use the auxiliary avoir instead of être with the passé composé for example. Students do need to to have a good grasp of the auxiliary verb être in the present tense to ensure that they can form the perfect tense in French accurately. In terms of the past participle, students begin to be able to predict it accurately, the more they see it, and construct it. French reflexive verbs tend to require additional practice for learners with English as a first language - firstly, the correct reflexive pronoun, and secondly, its location within a clause or sentence in relation to the pronoun and verbs. With l’imparfait, I often see students using j’étais me lever, je m’étais lever or even j’étais se lever instead of je me levais as a translation of I was getting up. There are specific differences in usage between English and French with this tense, and I do always discuss this with students about this when we’re using the workbooks - I tend to work fairly simultaneously with le passé composé and l’imparfait, because students are better able to understand correct usage when they look at a range of past tense contexts together, for example I have got up, I got up, I was getting up, I used to get up. Though the workbooks focus on formation / conjugation, rather than usage, I do always discuss these kinds of issues with students about this when we’re using the workbooks. I’ve found that this kind of conjugation practice workbook really helps students to***recognise and predict*** conjugation patterns. Though the workbooks focus solely on the correct conjugation of verbs, and does not look at word order in the context of full sentences, there are conjugation patterns that students can learn, recognise and apply, ensuring that their spoken and written French is accurate, and that their understanding of French across the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing is robust. Students become very familiar and confident the more they work with conjugation, and these quick conjugations certainly help to embed that successfully. The tenses are: present tense (le présent) perfect tense (le passé composé) imperfect tense (l’imparfait) Each set has the following structure: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: French-English and English-French. Three conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations: Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in French across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation. Conjugation Challenge 2: gives the infinitive of each verb in French, specifying the target pronoun. Students write the corresponding verb conjugation in French. Conjugation Challenge 3: students write the corresponding French verb conjugation, and its infinitive, from an English prompt. Notes and Next Steps template which students visit regularly - it really does encourage them to think about where they are now, how confident they feel, and what they might need to work on a little more to be absolutely sure of their conjugation skills. We also note down any new verbs we meet, which enables students to build up their own verb vocabulary bank. It’s a great tool to guide and inform whole-group discussion about learning and progress in general, which is a really successful and popular activity. answer key: 6-page booklet which is absolutely essential in my view. Answer keys help students develop more independence in their learning, and provide them with an additional opportunity to engage with language and grammar. They also genuinely enjoy correcting their own - and particularly each others’ - work. Currently in my store I have quick conjugation workbooks for each of these verbs groups across the following tenses: present tense (le présent) simple future tense (le futur simple) near future tense (le futur proche) perfect tense (le passé composé) imperfect tense (l’imparfait) conditional tense (le conditionnel) pluperfect tense (le plus-que-parfait) future perfect tense (le futur antérieur) conditional perfect tense (le conditionnel passé) Have a browse in my store for more French grammar activities, and a wide range of other French teaching and learning materials, with special offer bundles and lots of freebies too! The license for purchase is a single-user license only. Please read the Terms of Use. The activities really do help to create a lively language learning environment for young learners of Spanish, and offer a popular alternative to more traditional, teacher-led ’information about Spain’ lessons. Children can develop their knowledge of the Hispanic world - and through guided whole-group discussion - their home / host country too, in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, in part independently of the teacher. There is a bonus multi-focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing and spelling, and is a great way of aligning language learning with developing literacy skills in English. The resource comprises the following non-editable files: * 20 facts cards - there are four facts in each of the following topic groups: geography, country, landmarks, language and food. There are blank templates for children to research and create their own facts cards for each other. * Facts recording sheet challenge level 1 - there are two options: either two or four fact recording boxes per page. Children read their selected facts, and copy the information in the boxes. * Facts recording sheet challenge level 2 - there are also two options: two or four fact recording boxes in this challenge level. However, there is a more open-ended task: responding to the question “What did you learn?”. This requires children to read their fact card, process the information, and then recreate it in their own words, describing the fact in the context of what they have learned. * 28 question / comprehension cards — the questions have a differentiated range of challenge, and are based on the knowledge developed through the whole-group presentation and discussion, and the facts cards. There is one ’independent research’ question, which I use as a springboard for further discussion based on children’s own developing interests about Spain. There are blank templates here too - creating questions is a great way to think about and apply knowledge and learning. * question / comprehension cards recording sheet * whole-group facts presentation & discussion ¡MUCHAS GRACIAS Y BUEN VIAJE!

Each banner features the country, capital city and national flag, in Spanish. The bunting provides an instant introduction to the Spanish-speaking world. They’re also great for reading, speaking and pronunciation prompts too. I often ask ‘quick questions’ such as ***¿Cuál es la capital de…?***, or ¿Sí o no? Madrid es la capital de Paraguay? - there are lots of questioning and speaking opportunities, using the banners as visual prompts. Speaking does tend to be quite a challenging skill, particularly for beginner learners, so getting the most from classroom decor to encourage students to speak is really important - they’re a great tool for encouraging students to speak, and to construct sentences, from the very beginning of their Spanish learning. I’ve also found that there can be several countries that students don’t actually know, or have never heard of, and the posters are really useful for helping them develop their general understanding and knowledge of both the Spanish-speaking and wider world. Each banner has a small tag to clip onto a line across the classroom. Laminate the banners if you can, as they hang really well and remain in great condition for years. Dominoes games are ideal for language learning, with a multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, and reading. They are perfect for pair and small-group work too. Students work happily challenging themselves and each other to create a perfect domino time-sequence line, on the classroom floor or on a long(ish) table, by matching the times and the clock faces. This kind of activity is really versatile, and useful not only during the introduction phase of learning these particular clock times, but at many times across the school year - for cover lessons, as starters, warm-ups, plenaries, practice & refresh, and also free-choice activity time - it’s a great idea to have a range of folders ready for students to select particular content according to what area they feel they’d like to work on. The repetitive nature of the questions and answers, supported by the visual prompt of the clock faces, makes it perfect for practising, reinforcing & refreshing how to tell the time in French, and for pronunciation practice too. There are 8 clock faces per page, and I cut the cards in sets of 2, so four larger cards per page. This means that students can see two clock faces and times per game card, which really helps to consolidate learning. It’s also a lot less prep than cutting out eight individual cards, though I do actually have a set like this, which we use as a larger-size dominoes game. I always laminate my language learning cards - it’s definitely worth the extra prep time and expense, as they’re more learner-friendly, and remain in excellent condition for years. The aim of the game is to arrange the clocks in the relevant order. Students will generally have several cards each, depending on the size of your class. We usually set the cards on a table, so that students can see the timeline clearly. I frequently use a timer when we play. Playing in teams, using either a single challenge, or with both challenges together, is really popular - students find the competitive element really motivating and are genuinely keen to see which team can finish first, and whether they can beat their own time record. The games also work well as pair or small-group games. Each set has two games, each with a different challenge: = Challenge 1: with all the the clock times in numerical order, J’ai… Qui a… ? = Challenge 2: with the all the clock times in random order, which really helps recall and embedding new language, as students often learn time phrases in numerical order, As-tu… ? Sopas de Letras are a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word in Spanish, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This set features ten differentiated word searches, focusing on a range of vegetables in Spanish, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. The fruits include***masculine, feminine, singular and plural***, with a blend of definite and indefinite articles - this really helps students think a little more laterally about language, and their new vocabulary - they may learn la patata, and it’s useful to give students opportunity to think about grammatical concepts, and how la becomes una for example. I’ve selected high-frequency vegetables, such as potato or cabbage, and also vegetables which may be new to some learners, such as asparagus or artichoke. There are a range of phonemes and sounds too, such as the ***letter j (ajo)***, which is a sound particular to Spanish, and the letter ñ (champiñones), as the tilde + n plays a very important role in Spanish pronunciation. There are 5 Spanish to Spanish grids, labelled with carrots, where learners are prompted with the Spanish words, and look for them in Spanish in the grid. For additional consolidation and practice, each grid also features an English word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test. There are also 5 English to Spanish grids, labelled with a pepper, where the prompt words are given in English, and learners have to find the Spanish equivalent in the grid. For additional consolidation and practice in writing and spelling in Spanish, they also complete the Spanish word list on each page. Learners can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on each grid. There is an answer grid for each word search, so that learners can check their answers, or use for a little extra help if they need it. The word searches are in landscape format, as I’ve found this to be the best format for beginner language learners - language is very clear and accessible. The cards provide structured talk opportunities, and students are also able to work on developing their listening, reading and writing skills. The language and structures focus on German separable verbs in the perfect tense. The reference book includes all the questions and answers written out in full - we use this as a year-round reference resource too, and it’s useful for quick whole-group translation, vocab and grammar quizzes, which are a great way of revising and revisiting language and grammar in a more interactive and varied way. Students use the Notes and Next Steps template to reflect on their learning, and think about what they might reasonably do to progress in their learning. The question and answer card template is really popular too - it allows students to use their German practically and creatively, again using a multi-skill language learning approach. FRENCH NUMBERS 0-21 WORD WALL FREEBIE

PRIMARY FRENCH KS2 FRENCH NUMBERS 0-21 WORD WALL It’s easy to create an instant introduction to French Numbers 0-21 with this set of word wall cards, featuring beginning numbers that I like to share with my young learners of French. They’re really useful during the introduction phase, and we also use them for developing language skills and awareness in general. We like to do number guessing and calculation games at regular intervals too. There are two cards per 8.5 x 11 (A4) page in landscape format - the words are definitely big enough for children to be able to read - we do lots of guessing and mental math games, using these as a visual prompt. Although I tend to get my students to prepare the word wall header, I’ve included one here, as we often have both on our wall. There are two backgrounds to choose from - French flag or black wave. The cards to look great in colour, but are still really nice if you prefer to print in B&W to keep costs down. I definitely recommend that you print on card stock and/or laminate as it’s definitely worth the extra prep time and expense. The word wall cards hang really nicely, and they remain in excellent condition for a long time, so you’ll be able to use the***French Numbers Word Wall*** for years. ENGLISH FOR FRENCH SPEAKERS VERBS LIST FREEBIE #3

ANGLAIS LANGUE SECONDE ESL EFL ENGLISH COMMON VERBS FOR FRENCH-SPEAKING LEARNERS OF ENGLISH English language verb reference resource for French-speaking students focusing on high-frequency English verbs. I’ve found that the lists are a great learning support resource, and they’re really popular with students too. They work well when students keep them carefully in learning files or folders for current and future reference, either in class or at home. They also work well printed double-sided and laminated for small-group work in class. This list is a third collection of 25 high-frequency English verbs that students will meet in the beginning to intermediate stages of English learning programs. They are common English verbs, so they will see, hear and use the verbs regularly in daily life. They include regular and irregular verbs, and are all in the infinitive form - it’s an important step in learning is to ensure that students quickly develop a useful vocabulary bank, are able to recognize English verbs, and are confident with the meaning of those verbs in French - at that point they can move on to looking at conjugation and using the verbs in a communicative and practical context. Students shouldn’t take on the task of learning 25 verbs all at once though - this is more of a longer-term reference resource that students can use to audit their developing English verb vocabulary - embedding the verbs into long-term memory will come through frequent usage. There are two alphabetical lists - one English-French, and one French-English, as I’ve found that beginner language students prefer to have both as a reference resource. There are two backgrounds to choose from - England flag (which looks good as grammar / vocabulary display), and black wave - students tell me that this makes vocab lists more visually appealing, which is really useful when they’ve got a lot of vocab to work through and learn.
