JAWS lesson Paper 1 - the LANGUAGE question (EDUQAS GCSE English Language)

(0)
The language question on the paper 1 reading exam. The question is ‘How does the writer make us feel uneasy?’ Aimed at getting a grade 5-6. Based on the third chapter of the novel JAWS by Peter Benchley (the ‘Get Out the Water’ scene in the film). I have included all resources which include extract, model answers, exemplar answers and a fun phobia starter activity. Video clip of the scene in the film is on YouTube.

I made this for my students when I wanted them to revise prior units even when moving onto a new topic. Each of these starters are 5-10 mins long. They get a slide with an exam language question, sample quotes and a PEE sentence starter. They have 2 mins to write their PEE. The students seem to like it as it’s fun and competitive. Great for peer assessment too. It’s worked really well for me.

Draw a Tree / Journey of Life - Fun psychological tests!

Two fun psychological tests that the students love! Journey in Life - Try to get your group as relaxed as possible and ask them to close their eyes and listen to you. Set the scene of a day in the country. They are just about to start out on a walk. Ask them to imagine each of the following in turn, and each time write down what they saw in their imagination. Tell them they should write down the first image that comes into their head – not think about it for too long. After they have written down each description you can interpret their images using the ideas below. DRAW A TREE - Give each student a blank piece of paper and ask them to draw a tree. Tell them they are not to ask any questions about how to draw it – it is up to them. Then take in all the drawings and display them on the floor or where they can all see them. You may be able to group them at this stage. The following are possible interpretations of their drawings – they could make up their own interpretations!

An ‘outstanding’ lesson on the language evaluation question (HOW WELL DO YOU THINK…?) in non-fiction paper 2. This fantastic lesson uses the exam question, ‘How well do you think Joe Simpson captures his feelings about the situation he finds himself in?’ • This resource uses a great extract from Touching the Void (the rope cut!). The resource includes the following: Model answer Extract 10/10 on separate Microsoft Word document Lecturer exam paper annotations and comments Language analysis Group activities Examiner insight Modern, fun and dynamic images to help analyse the text. Connotation advice Answer structure Exemplar work
