The lesson covers the stages of each cycle, the levels of oestrogen, FSH, LH and progesterone during each stage as well as the function of each hormone. A worksheet exercise and a differentiated question grid are used to check student understanding at separate stages within the lesson. A reflective plenary is included. A full differentiated lesson covering the principles of homoeostasis - this lesson is based upon the AQA (B10.1) scheme of work but could be used for others. Stretch activities and support sheets included to support the learning of high and low abilities. Support sheets are literacy and numeracy based for learning checkpoints 1 and 2 respectively. Timers are included to promote pace, and power point animations facilitate Q/A during the review of each learning checkpoint. Class wide AFL can be conducted through a simple ‘hands up’ to indicate mark. The plenary activity is based on student reflection against the learning objectives.

A full lesson introducing the topic of ecosystems. The lesson is based on the OCR-A SOW but can be used for others. The lesson introduces key words relating to ecosystems through video, and has a simple match up activity to allow for AFL. Students then learn about biotic and abiotic factors making use of examples. They then participate in an activity where they must correctly categorise factors as biotic and abiotic from the board. A past exam question is included as a 'stretch question' to reinforce learning at this point. Students are then introduced to food chains, webs and trophic levels prior to a final 'question grid challenge' with differentiated questions based on the learning objective of the lesson. The plenary is based on reflective writing, where students gauge their progress towards the lessons learning objectives, and how they can improve.

After this students are handed a table to fill in as you work through slides detailing the nitrogen cycle. This is then peer assessed prior to students attempting 2 more past paper questions based on the nitrogen cycle. All answers incorporated into the slides, timers used to promote pace.

A full lesson based on the OCR-A SOW but could be used for others. This lesson was delivered to an A2 class but the content is quite simple making it suitable for AS alike. This lesson covers genetic and environmental factors within inheritance, using chlorosis in plants and body mass in animals as examples for the latter. The role of sexual reproduction in genetic variation is then studied, alongside homozygous and heterozygous inheritance and continuous/discontinuous variation. A range of activities (including 2 past paper questions) are used to apply knowledge/check for understanding at certain stages within the lesson. Timers are included to promote pace and all answers are included via animation. Self/peer marking follows each activity.

A full lesson based on the new AQA B1.1 SOW. The lesson covers converting units, light microscopes, electron microscopes, calculating magnification/image size, and magnification vs. resolution. Answers to written activities are incorporated into the slides. A practical activity is included where students observe cheek cells and calculate their size - commercial slides can be used to save time or alternatively students can prepare their own. In the case of the latter, this content could fill two 1h lessons.

A gripping starter involving a young child and her successful battle with a large tumour is used to incite interest. The lesson then covers tumour formation, benign vs. malignant tumours and the causes of cancer. A differentiated question grid is then used to apply knowledge/conduct AFL. The treatment of cancer is then covered followed by a PP question. Video, gif images and standard pictures/news articles are used throughout to maintain interest and focus. This lesson is particularly appealing to visual earners. All answers are included in the slides via animation facilitating questioning during self/peer assessment.
