A complete lesson on the topic of solubility, based upon activate 2 SOW. The lesson includes a simple practical where students assess how temperature effects the solubility of salt within water. Ranked questions and stretch activities support differentiation, support sheets guide students through the practical, timers promote pace and powerpoint animation facilitates Q/A during review of each learning checkpoint.
A full 1h lesson based on the activate 2 'metals and water' topic. The lesson incorporates a demonstration of group 1 metals reacting with water, alongside a reaction of magnesium and steam. If you are uncomfortable doing this videos can be used as an alternative. Prediction and equation writing is planned ahead of these demonstrations - students are scaffolded up to this. Students produce a mnemonic to remember the reactivity series and test their learning through a simple ( but fun) planner card activity. A great lesson to 'promote a love of learning' .
A full differentiated lesson for group 7 elements with everything you need. Based on activate SOW for year 8 but can be used for other SOW or age groups.
A complete lesson with everything you need for the topic of ions. Based on Edexcell SOW but can be used for others. Includes timers to promote pace and powerpoint animation to facilitate Q/A during peer or self correction of answers. Class wide AFL included and quiz for plenary exercise.
A full, differentiated lesson based on the new AQA SOW (C5.7). A starter where students categorise items as acidic, alkaline or neutral is used to determine preconceived knowledge. Following this the pH range, acids, bases, and alkalis are discussed making use of examples. Students are prompted to take notes at key points using red font and a pen symbol. The release of H+ and OH- ions is also discussed ahead of methods in determining the pH of solutions. Knowledge is then applied to a differentiated question grid followed by peer/self-marking. A practical exercise (tailored to (C5.7) is then conducted where students prepare a pH curve by systematically adding acid to an alkaline solution using a burette, and monitoring the pH using a probe. Note, pipettes and universal indicator can be used as simple alternatives respectively. Stretch questions are included for the more able. The plenary is based on students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives. All answers are incorporated into the slides facilitating self/peer marking and timers are included to promote pace.
A full lesson based on the new AQA (C5.2) SOW but could be used for others. This lesson has been prepared for a low to mid range ability. Displacement reactions are introduced through the starter and a short talk, students are prompted to take note of key text highlighted in red. There is then a short scaffolded activity where students must predict whether or not a reaction will occur by referring to the reactivity series. There is then a teacher led demonstration of such reactions, during which students must complete a table handout. Following a review of observations students are taught about carbon and hydrogens position within series during a short talk. Students then apply themselves to questions based on the content of the lesson. The plenary involves students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives. All answers are included through animation facilitating self/peer correction during questioning. Timers are included to promote pace. Instruction for the lab demonstration are also included.
Complete lesson with plan, support sheets. Fully differentiated and has timings for pace and PowerPoint animations to accommodate for Q/A during peer or self review of answers after each learning checkpoint. Exciting 'car race' plenary included with pre-made question/answer sheet.
Full differentiated lesson including practical activity and risk assessment. Tailored to activate SOW but can be used for others. Lesson is differentiated to support both more and less able. Timings and powerpoint animations used to keep pace and facilitate Q/A during self or peer marking.
Full differentiated lesson with everything you need for group 1 metals. Based on activate SOW and pitched to year 8 group - can be used for other years/SOW. Opportunity to demonstrate group 1 reactivity but video included in case otherwise. Class wide AFL through red, yellow and green card show me. Data activity included for independent learning with support sheets for less able.
A complete differentiated lesson with everything you need for the properties of ionic compounds. Tailored towards Edexcell SOW but can be used for others.
A full lesson with everything you need for covalent bonds. Based on Edexcell SOW but can be used for others. Animations and timers included to promote pace and Q/A during self or peer mediated correction of answers. Differentiated question grid included which also promotes challenge. Reflective plenary included based on progress against LO’s.
Full differentiated lesson with everything you need. Based on activate SOW and pitched to a year 8 group. Timers and powerpoint animations included to promote pace and Q/A during peer or self mediated correction. Exciting 'car race' plenary included with ready made questions. Class wide AFL supported through simple show me 'red, green or yellow card' exercise.
Full d lesson with everything you need, based on activate SOW and pitched to a year 8 group. Powerpoint animations included to facilitate self or peer mediated correction, timers included to promote pace. Whiteboard activity for class wide AFL and articulate activity included to promote literacy. Reflective plenary included.
A full lesson with everything you need for molecular compounds. Based on Edexcell SOW but can be used for others. Powerpoint animations and timers included to allow for Q/A during peer or self correction of answers and to promote pace receptively. Support sheets and stretch activities included to facilitate differentiation. Reflective plenary based on progress against the LO’s also included. PP question as starter based on covalent bonding.
A complete lesson based on 3 key areas within OCR chemistry C3. This lesson was produced for a high ability year 11 group during exam intervention, differentiation through the use of the included support sheets would facilitate use with lower abilities. It covers the following: percentage yield and atom economy, reaction masses (calculations) and batch vs. continuous processing . The lesson contains timers to promote pace and is fully animated to allow a Q/A session during peer assessment of answers after each learning checkpoint. The plenary is designed to guide students to reflect on their progress/emerging needs.
A full revision lesson based on the Activate 2 (C2.1) SOW but can be used for others. This lesson recaps metals and non-metals, periods and groups of the periodic table, properties of group 1 elements and reactivity in group 7 elements (displacement reactions). The starter activity is taken from another author on TES.
