Carbonyl reduction AS level outstanding lesson

(0)
These are thoroughly differentiated resources designed for an AS level chemistry lesson on reduction of carbonyl compounds. Objectives are framed as learning questions and graded C to A. There are clear AFL plenaries using mark schemes. There is a graded Who Wants to be a Millionaire quiz for an end plenary. The starter is an engaging scents demo using butanal (pleasant) and butanoic acid (rancid butter). Pace and student effort is the key to delivering an outstanding lesson using these resources. Mark schemes can be printed. Please rate this resource and leave feedback.
A level carbonyl oxidation lesson applied to scents
rs007rs007

A level carbonyl oxidation lesson applied to scents

(0)
This is a lesson designed as part of the Edexcel A2 unit 4 scheme of work on carbonyl compounds. In this lesson students can carry out a practical (grade C) to compare the oxidation of primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols. The oxidation and distillation of a primary alcohol is demonstrated. Students then develop their understanding (grade B) by considering which type of oxidant would be best to oxidise geraniol (rose scent) to germinal (lemon scent). Geraniol could be used in the demo. The grade A task is writing organic redox half equations. Please rate this resource and leave feedback.
Metals C1.3 GCSE revision flashcards x16

Exothermic endothermic enthalpy reactions KS4 KS5

Exothermic endothermic enthalpy reactions KS4 KS5

(2)
This is a lesson that works with a very able top set double science GCSE, triple science GCSE or AS chemistry. The levels are based on AS so these may need to be increased if this lesson is to be used at GCSE. The SAS video is played from 2 minutes 30 to around 5 minutes for the starter activity. The Top Gun theme tune could be used as an activity timer. Exam questions are from Edexcel AS chemistry unit 1 but work equally well for GCSE. The Mr T photo indicates 'challenge&' questions that require resilience (independent learning). Please rate and leave feedback.

Edexcel A level Chemistry Grade Boundaries 2013

(0)
This is a PowerPoint that I share with AS students so that they are aware of the grade boundaries. I use percentage equivalents to grade work that is handed in. It is worthwhile bringing to students attention that AS boundaries are lower than A2 despite the increasing challenge in A2.

Acid rain newspaper template and websites

(0)
There is a newspaper template with boxes that students fill in using information from the website links. The NSB website is a website that provides symbol equations (very challenging). The Doncaster website is a lot easier to read and understand. I will later add a lesson PowerPoint and keywords glossary.
Polarity peer editing exam Q task AS chemistry

Polarity peer editing exam Q task AS chemistry

(0)
This is a peer editing exam question task on polarity for AS Chemistry. Students use the glossary keywords to answer an exam question. To help develop exam writing skills there are 3 graded questions based on the exam question. Students answer each of these questions then pass the sheet on to their partner to peer edit their work - such as by adding more detail from the glossary. The actual mark scheme is provided for students to assess themselves against. Please rate this resource and leave feedback.

This Excel spreadsheet contains links to 48 fun and engaging science videos that are hosted on YouTube. These may be used for countdown timers, engaging starters or as instructional videos to accompany a main lesson activity. The spreadsheet can searched using a keyword for the topic that you are interested in. I have all of these downloaded to a hard drive (approximately 3GB of data) and am happy to make copies of these so please get in touch using my TES inbox.

AFL strategies 6 - Tarsia fun science activities

(2)
This is the 6th of my AFL strategies. Tarsia are an excellent and fun way of carrying out AFL. This is because the shape expected is generated if the correct answers are matched up. These are science tarsia and more of these will be added. Please leave feedback and rate the resources if you find them useful or have suggestions as to how they can be improved.
Acid rain video questions and answers with wordbank and challenge tasks

Acid rain video questions and answers with wordbank and challenge tasks

(1)
This a question sheet for students and an answer sheet for a YouTube video from The Fuse School on acid rain. The link to the video is in the worksheets. There is lots of differentiation for lower ability through the use of a wordbank and gap fill activities. Differentiation for higher ability is through use of chemical formulae, open questions and use of keywords such as 'enzyme' and 'combustion'. AFL is carried out by getting students to peer assess each others work and giving a total number of marks. Please rate this resource and leave feedback.
Cracking, polymers and ethene tarsia AFL activity
rs007rs007

Cracking, polymers and ethene tarsia AFL activity

(0)
This is a fun match up activity that provides instant AFL because the correct shape is generated by matching up the 12 correct answers. This can be a main activity or a fun 10 minute plenary. The topic is hydrocarbons and was used to teach the OCR Gateway C1 syllabus to year 10 GCSE students. Please leave feedback and rate this resource if you find it useful.

Crystallization practical lesson plan using salol

Crystallization practical lesson plan using salol

(0)
This is a lesson plan that has been designed and taught to year 8 students. It is taught early in the rock cycle scheme of work and uses salol. Glass rods are dipped in the salol and drops are put on warm, room temperature and cooled (in freezer) glass slides. Crystal size is measured and compared. This model is used to make anologies with rock cooling in the real world. Feedback to my TES inbox please.
