This is a set of 6 trump cards on separating mixtures. They cover distillation, filtration, decanting, paper chromatography, magnet and gel electrophoresis (challenge). The PowerPoint can be modified. The Word document is printed and laminated. These can be used for Key Stage 3 groups as well as lower ability GCSE groups. Film character elements differentiated

This is a fun activity that be used as a lesson starter or for revision. Students replace element names with symbols to find the names of film characters (easier) or use the clues to work out the symbols (challenging). Please rate this resource and leave feedback.

Enthalpy change graphical method and calculating excess - AS Chemistry

(0)
This is an AS Chemistry lesson on calculating which chemical is in excess in a reaction. Also students calculate an enthalpy change using a graphical method for reactions that happen slowly and therefore heat is lost to the surroundings when recording the temperature rise. The graphical method involves estimating the actual temperature increase. There is opportunity to use hand warmers for the starter activity and reacting magnesium with oxygen (i.e. in air) as a main activity. Please rate this resource and leave feedback.
Chemistry KS3 and GCSE graded keywords for display

Chemistry KS3 and GCSE graded keywords for display

(2)
These are a comprehensive selection of chemistry keywords that students use at KS3 and GCSE. I have taken a lot of time to create this resource so that each keyword is carefully linked to Blooms taxonomy, cognitive demand and grades. This is explained in detail in the comments document. These keywords as a display will not only improve literacy in science but also make students aware of the words that they should be using at a particular target grade. Metals, alloys, acids, bases labels for card sort

Metals, alloys, acids, bases labels for card sort

(0)
I have created a laminated chemicals, elements and compounds cardsort that is colour coded and kept in A4 plastic wallets. Red = acid, blue = alkali / CO2 / water, grey = metals, non-metals = elemental colours where possible. I make 6 lots of these so that I have one set per table. They can be used to: (1) make word equations (and by extension symbol equations), (2) sort metals from non-metals, (3) sort acids from bases (4) sort elemental metals from alloys. Many other uses also. Feedback to my TES inbox please.
Peer editing templates useful for building on AFL

Peer editing templates useful for building on AFL

(0)
Templates are provided that can be readily modified. One template is a GCSE revision template where students are guided to create their own exam questions and peer edit answers. The second template is useful for writing Blooms-leveled answers at Key Stage 3 and includes a wordbank. The third is an AS Chemistry exam question with keyword glossary. All templates include written instructions for students. Peer editing is great when combined with AFL strategies before and after the activity.

Periodicity fun tarsia AFL activity

This is a periodicity tarsia activity for students studying AS level Chemistry. This works really well when students also use the glossary provided. The second slide is the slide that is printed on A4 and then cut out. the third slide is a slide that can be modified. Please leave feedback.

Fullerenes and buckyballs GCSE graded ICT task

(2)
This is a graded task sheet designed for independent working. There is differentiation by keyword, website and task. All students make an advert explaining how the materials work and bright and capable students can design their own materials. The grade A website is very detailed and provides stretch and challenge up to A* so students need to be selective in what they read. I have included a document that provides detail about the reading complexity and reading age of the websites. Please leave a comment if you find this useful or if you think that it can be improved.

Student friendly marking grid - great for AFL, marking 6 mark questions and demonstrating progress

(0)
This is a student friendly marking grid that was designed following a staff CPD session that I attended where an art teacher related how she provided students with specific pre-written assessment points that were numbered to reduce copying out. There are 6 marking points. I make the first 3 easier points for weaker students to meet and the last 3 more challenging points to stretch the students and provide evidence of progress. The grid can then be copied to a word document and printed two grids to one A4 page. An example lesson is provided (alternatives to fossil fuels) to see how this can be used in lesson. The students reply to their EBI in their books. Please rate this resource and leave feedback.
