I am currently a Head of Modern Languages in a large secondary school in the North East Of England. I also work with the local University with PGCE MFL students, an area of my work I thoroughly enjoy. I am passionate about teaching and learning, and have a particular interest in the teaching of grammar and of literary texts to develop reading, writing and listening skills. I am currently working on developing a range of resources to support the study of Le Petit Nicolas and the series of books.

L'imparfait-The Imperfect tense in French. Formation and activities to practise

This is designed for an introduction to this tense with my year 8. We have used it before but we now need to understand how it works so students become independent in building and using this tense themselves. Any comments are welcome. The vowel gap fill activity can be used for pair work, for speaking and or writing. Students have to fill in the gaps ( stars ) with vowels only and then they could use the grid as support in speaking tasks. I hope this is useful to colleagues, I am sharing as it has been tried and tested many times .

I have three boxes (one green, one pink as could not find orange, one red) In these I place different styles of help and support to help writing in lessons or even when setting homework. I would place the translation in the green box, the french clues in the pink box and the english clues in the red box.

The aim of this activity is not only to guide students to use both tenses accurately but to also show them the importance of other grammatical aspects such as the use of time expressions, connectives and opinions, as well as sentence development.

Les repas, using 3 tenses. Studio 2 Module 4

This is a lesson based on Studio 2, module 4 chez moi, chez toi, but I added the near future tense in the lesson, as the texts from the Studio dod not allow for this and there was a need to stretch more able. You will need to refer to the texts from Studio 2 to do the translations, but these can be done without looking at the texts if Studio 2 is not used. The sequencing activities was a differentiated activitiy to stretch more able while others needed consolidation with the tenses ( refer to lesson plan )

Lesson based on the use of technologies and internet. Recognising infinitives and joggling with other tenses, with main activities on error correcting in order to encourage students to work on accuracy, grammar and spellings. Used with year 10 but can be amended for other year groups.

You can use this as a template and type any vocabulary you want. Get students to fold and hide, then unfold and check, good for starters especially when preparing for speaking or writing controlled assessements.

with an accompanying handout to support and a reading activity, the power point contains a sentence builder and a listening ' memory map' for students to complete after they have listened to the script to see what they remember and if they can identify the activities.

I will try this with my year 11. Think they will like it. Visit the French website 1 jour 1 actu. play the clip ( in Informations animees ), it is the clip from Monday 30/11. the use the activities attached as you wish. The stater sheet will help students familiarise themselves with the script but you may wish to use it as a plenary rather than as a starter, this will depend on your groups ( A Level should cope with it as a starter ). Then complete all activities or even use the script with the first listening, then remove it gradually. offer the vocabulary search once students are more confident , it can be done with or without the script. I have put first letters of each words needed in French for guidance.

I did this to help my class revise different verbs, tenses ( imperfect and present ), adjectives and the DOP. The examples of names can be tweaked, you may also wish to create a new template so you can work with the verbs, verb endings and also adjectives. The last slide introduces the subjunctive mode with il faut que and regular verbs. I have now also added two sheets to work with verbs, with support on sheet 2 ( differentiated verb gap fill )

This is to help students develop skills in reading and writing, revise the use of past, present and future, based on a text giving an account of an aristocrat's daily routine just before the start of the French revolution. The text is on Studio 2 in the last unit, but can be made up by teachers. The horrible stories clip can be used as a starter activity, I used mini whiteboards first to check what students knew about this.\nUse the vocab sheet ( from the CLIL4teachers website, not my own creation for this one ! ) to do match up or card sort.

Now this was the starting point of a new Scheme of learning introduced for the first term as a transition module. I will add the rest later as the edited version contains listening activities on food and recipes, and more on foods,, with some elements of grammar.

This is such a beautiful and powerful song by Françoise Hardy, covering so many areas of study. From grammar to expressions of feelings of joy and nostalgia, there is so much to exploit and I will add more resources, but my 6th form love it. A beautiful melody at a steady pace. I hope it is useful and that this song is enjoyed by colleagues around the globe.

This reinforces the vocabulary and grammar on verbs in the past tense that take je suis/ on est . This is for a 7th Grade middle to high ability and the slide with guided writing has color-coding for verbs stated in the outcomes ( most = pink verbs, some pink and blue verbs )
