What is KCSIE 2021 and why is it important?
Keeping children safe in education (KCSIE) is statutory guidance from the Department for Education (DfE) in England. Schools and colleges in England must follow it when carrying out their duties to safeguard and promote the welfare of children.
You'll find our summary of the changes to KCSIE 2021 in our free guide Keeping children safe in education (KCSIE) 2021: How will it affect you?
Why is KCSIE updated?
Every one to two years, the government update the guidance based on a number of factors including: new laws that have been introduced – such as the Coronavirus Act 2020, changes in government – such as Brexit, and new findings from research, so schools and colleges know what policies, procedures and preventative measures should be put in place to keep children safe.
KCISE 2020 update and Covid – the impact on KCISE 2021
The DfE began to consult on an update to KCSIE in February 2020. Due to Covid-19, the consultation was withdrawn. This new update includes some responses to the 2020 consultation as well as the consultation that ran this year.
