Mr Poots, you are of course absolutely right in your letter (June 5). There are children who enjoy learning a foreign language and who will use the skill in later life. I would not dream of not offering it as a subject choice.
But hand on heart, are there some of your pupils who hate it, can’t do it and waste their time, their teacher’s time and the taxpayers’ money? Or does your school offer them an alternative?
For some young people, including bright children who have severe dyslexia, it is not a good course choice and, for this minority, an option should be offered.
I’ll take a rain check on the holiday offer, and I will get back to you when I am retired.
Penny Ward, Maule Street, Carnoustie.
