Key Themes: Public art and architecture, and their relationship with politics, history, social ideals, and the public. Who decides how our social and cultural environment is developed? Who should decide? What values or ideals should be represented, and how? How might public buildings and art affect how we think about ourselves?
Citizenship in history: Ask pupils in groups to research their favourite public building or artwork, and make presentations on what values, ideals or messages are being conveyed by it. Examples from Ancient Rome, Nazi Germany or the Industrial Revolution could spark ideas.
