I was a huge fan of Tracy Beaker as a child, so I couldn’t wait to share this new instalment with my class. And I was delighted that, right from the get-go, we were thrown straight back into the wonderful world of Tracy Beaker, complete with temper tantrums, random bouts of “hayfever” and Tracy’s fiery character!

Jacqueline Wilson sets the context well by making references to the popular TV shows and the much-loved Tracy Beaker book series. This allows readers of all ages to reconnect with a character whose life they feel like they have been part of. From the joys of the dumping ground to the mischievous games in Dare Game, and even Tracy’s return as a social worker. Every part of Tracy’s growing up is re-lived, so readers who aren’t familiar with the world of Beaker need not worry.

The story is told from the point of view of Jess Beaker, who has the same striking jet-black curly hair as her mum Tracy. Jess is a very loveable character. Although she carries many of her mother’s traits, she brings out a much softer nurturing side to Tracy.

Unfortunately, we learn that Tracy’s life has not turned out the way she imagined when living in the dumping ground. Nevertheless, her and her daughter are happy and have created a wonderful loving home in their council estate flat. Fortunately, Cam, Tracy’s foster mum, still plays a vital role in her life and is much loved by Jess, proving a safe place in times of uncertainty.

What I love most about My Mum Tracy Beaker is the way in which Jacqueline Wilson fosters children’s love of reading through her subtle acknowledgement to other popular books. I loved that as a keen reader I now shared something with the main character, Jess. I also enjoyed watching Jess develop a friendship with her former bully, who lives in the rival council block. It’s a great demonstration of the power of friendship overcoming challenging and ever-changing circumstances.

Pupil reviews: ‘I really enjoyed it!’

I very much related to the character because she was a lot like me, she loved books and hated sports day! I read it because I really enjoyed the other Tracy Beaker stories and wanted to find out what happened next.  Also, I liked that it has references to other books.

Bethany, aged 11

I have not read any of the other Tracy Beaker books or seen the show. But I like how the book is from a child’s (Jess’) perspective, as its usually from an adult’s. My favourite character is the dog Alfie because I think he sounds so cute!

Stella, aged 10

My favourite character is Tyrone because I love the way he looks out for Jess and he is really kind to her. I like My Mum Tracy Beaker because it makes lots of links to the episodes of Tracy Beaker and the other books. I really enjoyed it!

Poppy, aged 10
