The Most Marvellous Invention of All by Douglas Mothershaw (The Book Guild Limited pound;8.95) is a wacky, bitingly witty debut novel about Tom, who is bullied at school as a “swot”. He has other problems: his grandmother has dementia and his sister is determined to have her own way.
Tom’s dad is a brilliant cientist who has invented a machine that can bring images to life. The narrative takes off when Tom brings into existence the super-hero from his favourite computer game and his super-hero’s arch-enemy. The story is tempting enough to lure even the most hardened game addict away from the computer.
