Tom Finn-Kelcey made some excellent points in “My careers advice? Enjoy your childhood” (Comment, 24 January). Children should not be pressurised into specialising too early.
We should indeed keep in mind the value of “learning for its own sake”, which is an effective route to self-improvement. The curriculum should provide the broadest possible range of subjects and activities. Enthusiasm built on intrinsic motivation is so much more effective than piling on the pressure.
