Hardly a week goes by without a new portal site for teachers appearing on the net. An education portal is a site that claims to point teachers to the best resources and enables them to get the most out of the web. Few live up to their promise.

The latest is eSchoolnet from the European Schoolnet, a partnership of 23 European education departments tasked with developing learning across Europe. The portal includes education news, online training opportunities, curriculum resources, research and examples of best practice in ICT. It provides opportunities for collaborative projects between schools in a safe, multilingual environment.

Schoolnet is based in Brussels, home of Tintin and the comic strip, so it is celebrating its launch with a cartoon competition for five to 18-year-olds. Apple Computers and Utopia Comics are supplying prizes. To enter, children must create a cartoon on the theme of tolerance. Judging is in primary and secondary categories. Entries must be submitted via the portal by April 19.
