A former primary school headteacher has been reprimanded for failing to summon medical help after one of her pupils broke a leg while playing football.

Rowena Brace, who was the head of Hope Brook Primary in Longhope, Gloucestershire, failed to call an ambulance for the injured child, a General Teaching Council for England hearing was told.

Mrs Brace was also found guilty of allowing pupils extra time to finish Sats, treating staff inappropriately and improperly revising results from the foundation stage profile.

A GTC disciplinary committee said that Mrs Brace’s behaviour had fallen short of the standards expected of a professional teacher.

In one incident, Mrs Brace closed a window through which one of her teachers was holding a conversation with a parent, which the panel said was inappropriate. The parents had complained that they were made to feel awkward by her behaviour.

In the spring term of 2005, Mrs Brace allowed pupils extra time to finish a Sats paper because of a disturbance she said had taken place outside. She admitted she had failed to follow the proper guidelines.

Mrs Brace was suspended from the school and was finally dismissed in 2007.

Despite the allegations proven against her, the GTC found that while Mrs Brace had committed errors of judgment, she had not acted with malice.

It found four other claims that she had treated staff inappropriately unproven.

The council said that Mrs Brace was working in “very challenging” circumstances following the merger of two schools and was in her first headship. A reprimand will remain on her file for two years.
