* Rights and responsibilities: through role-play develop an understanding of different points of view about shanty towns. Do the inhabitants have the right to occupy the land they have built on? Who is responsible for providing the settlements with basic services such as water? Is it the city authorities, the owners of the factories they work in or the shanty dwellers themselves? * Globalisation: compare images of major world cities. Is urban iconography (eg the McDonalds “M”) so ubiquitous that they are the same the world over?
* Social justice: in cities the rich often live a short distance from the poor, but the two rarely meet. Investigate the growth of “gated communities” such as the Greenwich Peninsula in London, and the impact these places are having on the areas surrounding them.
