Favourite day off?
I’ll pick up some sushi from the market and take it to the grounds of the Royal Naval College. Then walk along the river to an old pub called The Cutty Sark Tavern (4-6 Ballast Quay, 0208 858 3146), where they do good gammon steaks. There’s a massive bay window with views of the river and the Dome [now the O2], and it’s very atmospheric.
When’s a good time to come?
People always say Sunday. All the markets are open. The undercover market is in the centre with antique stalls, vintage clothing, a leather bag stall, furniture and a psychic (not that I’d go to one).
Daytime treats?
Pistachio’s (15 Nelson Road, 0208 853 0602) has a lovely outside area. Or the Richard I (52 Royal Hill, 0208 692 2996) pub set in a beautiful Georgian street.
Evening delights?
I’d recommend a nice Indian called Mogul (10 Greenwich Church Street, 0208 858 1500). I’d like to try the Spread Eagle (1-2 Stockwell Street, 0208 853 2333) as the food looks good.
Visitors beware
Don’t mention the Cutty Sark. [The original tea clipper was damaged by fire in May]. It’s being restored.
Don’t miss
Greenwich Park is spectacular. In summer, they put on plays in the Rose Garden. In winter, they have ice-skating. The Royal Observatory has brilliant views.
Remember to buy
Greenwich seems to attract good photographers and there’s more than one stall selling old and new photos
