TARGET LITERACY. By Roger Lane. Student’s book pound;7.50Teacher’s book pound;12. Oxford University Press

Despite the intensive focus on primary literacy, there are still going to be students who arrive in Year 7 with only a shaky grasp of the linguistic demands of different genres. These books are aimed at helping those students develop their confidence throug accessible texts and clear, well-structured activities, with photocopiable resources in the teacher’s book to consolidate and develop their learning, with writing frames and grammar exercises to help with basic accuracy. The tone throughout is friendly without being patronising, and could prove very useful for less able students at key stage 3.
