Right royal celebration in South Tyneside
South Tyneside College was due to get the royal seal of approval today, with a visit from the Duke of York. Prince Andrew was expected to open a #163;3 million refurbishment at the college’s South Shields campus in a visit organised to mark the 150th anniversary of the college’s marine school. Principal Lindsey Whiterod said: “The college has been at the heart of the community in South Tyneside for generations, and it’s particularly fitting that in our 150th year we’ll be receiving a royal visit.”
From an NVQ to a Michelin star
Former Cornwall College catering student Chris Eden has been awarded a Michelin star. Chris, who now works at the Driftwood Hotel in Cornwall, started his career by taking cookery NVQs at Cornwall College. He has now agreed to pass on tips to the college’s new crop of trainee chefs. “I want current students to be a part of my kitchen. The kids at Cornwall College are the industry’s future and I want to be a part of that,” he said.
New online prospectus embraces the digital age
Forget about glossy brochures - Solihull College has launched a new breed of prospectus. The online interactive magazine showcases the courses on offer, as well as its #163;31 million campus redevelopment. It features short films from students and staff about college life and what each course involves. Marketing director Dave Cooper said: “The college is always looking for new ways to promote what further education can offer young people and we hope that using new media platforms will engage them in a creative and stimulating way.”
