Online stories to stimulate

A collection of lively and exciting online stories with a mathematical flavour could be just the thing for stimulating pupils’ interest. Eight stories by Steve Way can be found on the award-winning Count On site, a free online resource funded by the Department for Education and Skills.

Each story has a different mathematical subject and the level of complexity covers all ages from Reception to Year 6. Join the ostrich-riding Wise Wizz of Woo for a journey to Nutty Numbers in Nutty Land and meet Clothespeg to learn how to measure. In Daft Discovery, children can get to know the Quadril and Trian sailors to find out about describing and measuring shapes, and Inventing Numbers tells us in poetry how the Wise Wizz made numbers. These stories will inspire children to write their own versions. Follow-up ideas for teachers are planned. www.counton.org
