Opening Minds scheme bares its wares

We welcome the coverage of the accreditation of RSA Opening Minds (“Schools to face scrutiny on Opening Minds work”, October 22). However, there were a number of omissions that risked a misreading of the motivation and nature of the scheme.

The evaluation of Opening Minds curriculum practice was commissioned by the RSA (Royal Society of Arts), to explore the range and depth that is being conducted in over 200 secondary schools. The evaluation identified many examples of outstanding and innovative practice, and overwhelming enthusiasm and commitment from teachers who see Opening Minds as a powerful device for engaging young people and providing learning tools. However, the range of practice being undertaken under the banner of “RSA Opening Minds” motivated our wish to ensure greater consistency - hence our launch of the RSA Opening Minds Charity and its training schools to provide accreditation and potential support to other schools using, or wishing to use, the curriculum.

Interested schools are invited to email rsaopeningminds@rsa.org.uk or visit our new dedicated website from November 11: www.rsaopeningminds.org.uk
