Maths: Find out about the highest mountain peaks around the world. Make graphs and charts to demonstrate their respective heights.
Historyliteracy: Interview grandparents and other contacts about what they remember about the first successful ascent of Everest. Locate contemporary newspaper articles about the ascent. Use newsreel footage. Look at the letters written to newspapers in the days after the success. Why was it considered so important?
Literacy: Write diary entries for Edmund Hillary or Tenzing Norgay describing their ascent to the summit of Everest. Imagine that you could interview Edmund Hillary, Tenzing Norgay or Chris Mothersdale. Make a list of the questions you would ask. (Develop this into a “hot seating” activity.)
Use a picture of the two mountaineers. Children can use Post-it notes to describe what they might have said to each other as they reached the summit.
