Moving from Strathclyde Region has caused Malcolm Green to alter his travelling habits. Glasgow’s education chairman used to be seen striding purposefully from the classics department, which pays his wages at Gilmorehill, down Kelvin Way and through Anderston to Strathclyde House.
Now Green has had to forsake Shanks’s pony for the subway, which takes him close to his new seat of power in George Square Chambers. He has now become a familiar sight, briefcase open and education committee papers on his lap, shoogling between Hillhead and Buchanan Street stations.
Rumour has it that parent activists, anxious to get a sight of secret lists of doomed schools, have taken to underground tactics. A subway seat next to Green allows a quick shuftie.
