Prime Minister Tony Blair, in a major speech on science yesterday, was expected to express his determination to get more young people studying the subject in schools.
He was due to say that science is vital for the economy and for the nation’s health and prosperity, and that turning our back on scientific development could give other nations an economic advantage.
He recognised public concerns about some developments but stressed the strong regulatory framework that was in place and said moral judgments should be made based around the facts that science uncovered.
