LOUIS ARMSTRONG

www.technoir.netjazzlouie.html

Worth visiting to hear much of the early music of one of the century’s great musicians. You will need RealAudio software, which is available free, and you will be able to listen to very good quality sound. It is also a good demonstration of audio on demand and of the power of the Internet to work with sound.

MASS AND WEIGHT

www.exploratorium.eduronhweightindex.htm

It is difficult to think of a more interesting way to introduce physics concepts. “If you are in a spaceship far between the stars and you put a scale underneath you, the scale would read zero. Your weight is zero. You are weightless. There is an anvil floating next to you. It’s also weightless. Are you or the anvil mass-less? Absolutely not. If you grabbed the anvil and tried to shake it, you would have to push it to get it going and pull it to get it to stop. It still has inertia and hence mass, yet it has no weight. See the difference?” The site has a simple way of determining your weight on a number of places ranging from the moon to Callisto, one of Jupiter’s moons.

THE BRADFORD ROBOTIC TELESCOPE

www.eia.brad.ac.ukrti

Other data (weather information and reports) is obtained and updated on this site automatically every day.

VISUAL THESAURUS

www.plumbdesign.comthesaurusmain.html

It is often instructive to look at something we know from the real world and see how a designer translates it into the on-line world. “The Plumb Design Visual Thesaurus is an exploration of sense relationships within the English language. By clicking on words, you follow a thread of meaning, creating a spatial map of linguistic associations.”
