Sir Tim, educated at Monkton Combe school, St John’s College, Cambridge and Yale University, held a number of key posts at the Treasury and was private secretary to prime ministers James Callaghan and Margaret Thatcher.
From 1989 to 1994 he was permanent secretary at the Department for Overseas Development and from 1994 to 1995 permanent secretary at the DES, before it became the Department for Education and Employment. H is currently deputy chairman of the British Council and a trustee of Sadler’s Wells.
Neil Harries has been appointed expert adviser on information and communication technology to the pre-16 education committee of the Welsh Assembly.
Mr Harries recently retired as director of education and leisure of Caerphilly, where he launched the Caerphilly County Learning Network. He will be advising the committee on the development of the National Grid for Learning in Wales, the scope for more co-operation between education authorities and the need for further
specialist guidance to authorities on the best networking
solutions for schools.
