Scottish teachers have been invited to share their insights into high-quality practice, at a major international education conference being held in Glasgow next year.

Organisers are appealing to teachers throughout Scotland - at all stages of their career - to make submissions by the start of September.

The University of Glasgow School of Education will host the 21st biennial International Study Association of Teachers and Teaching (ISATT) conference from 30 June to 4 July 2025.

The ISATT theme for 2025 is “quality teaching for a more equitable world”.

‘Real interest’ in work of teachers in Scotland

Madelaine Baker, headteacher at Drumchapel High School, in Glasgow, highlighted her previous experience of ISATT - which held its 2023 conference at the University of Bari Aldo Moro, in Italy - as she encouraged teachers to make submissions.

“It was a privilege to be part of a global conference, which allowed us to present our work on social justice and learn from researchers and colleagues across the world,” she said. “The feedback from delegates from many countries was one of real interest in the work we are doing in Scotland and the impact on school teachers and leaders, and ultimately on our children and young people.”

She added: “I learned so much from other countries and systems, which is helping us to work collaboratively as international educators.”

Submissions, in the form of a 300-word abstract, should address one or more of seven sub-themes:

  • Characteristics of quality teaching
  • Research on equitable teaching practices
  • Addressing social justice by leveraging technology and innovative approaches
  • Curriculum design for equitable teaching
  • Equity and inclusion in teacher education
  • Reconciling tensions for a new social contract in education
  • Promoting equity and inclusion through effective partnerships with schools.

The deadline for abstracts is Sunday 1 September.

Importance of research in teaching

Claire Hamilton, principal teacher of drama at Bearsden Academy, in East Dunbartonshire, also has experience of ISATT and said it had been “a privilege to share my own MEd dissertation research in such a supportive environment”, adding: “This has benefited me hugely as a practitioner and reinforced the importance of research in my ongoing professional development.”

Alison Mitchell, headteacher in residence at University of Glasgow School of Education, said that the ISATT 2025 conference would “explore how educators and researchers consider children and young people’s social and cultural identities to provide opportunities for rich educational experiences for all students, including the most disadvantaged or marginalised”.
