Labour shadow schools minister: Stephen Morgan

Stephen Morgan has been named as new shadow schools minister following a Labour reshuffle.

Mr Morgan tweeted that he looked “forward to working with parents, teachers and children to give our all children the best start in life”.

The Portsmouth South MP said: “Nothing is more important to our future as a country than giving children the opportunities they need.

“That’s why I want schools to be the place where children aim high, work hard and achieve their dreams, regardless of where they are from.

“It is a huge privilege to be appointed shadow schools minister today.”

Mr Morgan, who was born in Portsmouth and attended local state schools in his constituency, was the first in his family to go to university.

New shadow minister served as school governor

He has served as a chair of governors at a local primary and as a governor at a secondary school in Portsmouth.

He will take on the role following the promotion of former shadow schools minister Peter Kyle to shadow secretary for Northern Ireland.

Helen Hayes will replace Tulip Siddiq as shadow children’s minister.

The news follows the appointment of Bridget Phillipson, who replaced Kate Green as shadow education secretary last week.
