Viva 1 - module 4.4 como es tu casa o piso? wondrous translation maze activity

(1)
A translation maze inspired on the language from pages 86 and 87 on the Viva 1 textbook, topic ‘como es tu casa o piso?’ (module 4.4). All instructions are on the resource, and should be displayed and explained to students before starting to play. Aim: to find your way out of the maze by shading a path of correct answers. You get out when your path connects the entrance with the exit boxes. If you don’t know this activity it has, in essence, the same principle as a bingo. It takes quite some time to run, as there are 18 different questions/rounds and children get very excited by shading the boxes and counting how many left they need to shade before they get out of the maze! The teacher should then check the answers (all included) of any child claiming to have got out of the maze: note they should be perfect or close to perfect translations to be able to call a winner. If you were to get through the 18 rounds and no one has managed to get out of the maze (unlikely), go back to question 1 and get them to translate the opposite sentence until someone can win. This activity tends to work wonders with any age group and is a nice alternative to bingo. It’s also easily editable - you might find the sentences I’ve used are too challenging for your class. If you like this resource, please leave a rating. On my profile you can find the same activity for Viva 2 - module 5.1 que tipo de casa prefieres? with vocabulary related to pages 104-105.

spanish beginners - desk cheat sheet with name and key phrases for the first days

(0)
A nice, desk cheat sheet where our students will have a set of key phrases in Spanish (and their meanings in English below) facing them to encourage them practise the target language as much as possible in the classroom. On the side of the paper that is facing the teacher you will find their names written down to help you learn these, and 4 things they want us to know about themselves (e.g. a drawing of them riding a horse, a foot ball, music, etc) with a phrase that defines each picture. Perfect resource to do in the first days of school where children have no or very little knowledge of Spanish. It works really well because it helps us remember their names and get to know them a little better. Simply print it off, cut it out, fold it in two and stick the small flaps to the other half of the paper so that it can stand on your students’ desk.

introductions / presentaciones - 24 identity cards for oral production; Spanish beginners

(0)
24 different cards which include a character, their name, mood, age, birthday, where they live and number of pets they have. How to carry out this task: students get to walk around the classroom and ask each other the 6 basic questions (como te llamas, como estas, donde vives, etc) according to what they have on their card. Once done, they swap cards and move on to introduce themselves to a different peer. You can get students to do this in the first person or even in the third person if you want to work different verb endings. These cards are easily adaptable to any language and you can edit the information any time. Print in colour and laminate them, they will last you a lifetime. This activity was designed to go with Mira 1 as a recap of the first module once module 3 has been done as well (as that’s when pets are introduced).

Mira 1 - Module 3: mis hermanos - lesson to work on giving information about siblings

4 activities designed to introduce how to describe siblings in terms of saying what their names and age are and to show students how to give a short opinion on them. This is to be used, ideally, after teaching children how to say how many siblings they have, and whether they’re older or younger. The document includes a dialogue for students to put in order, a quick vocab task based on words from said dialogue, and a collaborative listening tasks for students to be the speakers. Students will be able to create their own dialogue by the end of the lesson.

¿esto o lo otro? - this or that; spanish activity to practise speaking

Inspired on social media trends, this resource is made up of 5 sheets of paper with 60 everyday life items for students to practise comparisons. The idea is for students to first choose, in each instance, which item they prefer (e.g. sightseeing vs relaxing in the beach), then go through all of them together to have a more detailed chat. Items belong to a range of categories so that the conversations will touch up on food, holidays, seasons, etc. Activity is perfect to use as an ice-breaker or simply for general conversation.

Stimmt 1 - Freizeit, Klassenzimmer & Stadt / freetime, classroom & city Sentence Builders

(0)
3 differentiated sentence builders I created to get students speaking about: Kapitel 3 - Was machst du in deiner Freizeit? Kapitel 4 - Was gibt es in deinem Klassenzimmer? Kapitel 4 - Was gibt es in deiner Stadt? These have proved successful with my students, as they haven’t not only aided with speaking tasks, but they’ve loved to refer to them for writing tasks as well, as they know exactly what to do in order to produce high quality sentences. Each builder includes step by step ideas on how to extend sentences to go from a grade B to A*.
