All the resources published here are made by me and used on a daily basis . I teach English Language and Literature in a busy secondary school from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 5 and aim to create resources that are simple to use, engaging for students and practical to use when you have a full teaching day. There's a selection of full units, sample lessons and some of the resources I use the most, already published and I'll be adding to these regularly. Thanks for your interest in my work.

FREE Standalone Cover Lesson: Reading Comprehension and Inference Combined with Creative Writing

(10)
The first in a series of standalone cover lessons designed to be delivered by non-specialists. As with the other lessons in this series, the resource focuses on a short extract from contemporary teenage fiction with tasks concentrating on developing comprehension and inference skills. This is followed by a creative writing task inspired by the extract. Would also work as a standalone skills lesson. If you like this, there are two additional bundles of cover lessons available priced at £2 for four lessons. All extracts are in the public domain courtesy of Love Reading 4 Kids. Thanks for your interest.

Winter Poetry Short Unit for Year 7/8

(1)
**Winter Poetry Unit ** This is a short, 6 lesson scheme of work focusing on a selection of winter-themed poetry suitable for Year 7/8. All lessons are fully resourced on the Powerpoints, just print off the slides you need. Originally intended for split groups who only saw one of their teachers either once a week or once a fortnight, so the lessons are linked but quite independent of each other and also work as one-offs. Together, they focus on developing students analytical skills with an emphasis on developing interpretations of a text. The unit was designed to be delivered to mixed ability groups, so differentiation is largely built in, with challenge tasks indicated in red and marked with a star. There is an introductory lesson on exploring the idea of winter as a theme/motif through a series of unseen extracts and then this leads into a short anthology of poetry. Poets covered include: Haiku by Basho and Issa William Carlos Williams Norman MacCaig Ted Hughes Robert Frost Thanks for your interest.

Jekyll and Hyde Lesson - Making links across the text. Can be used from Chapter 5 onwards.

This is a fully resourced lesson on “Jekyll and Hyde” aimed at Year 10 students. The lesson fits in well around halfway through the novel - I always deliver it around the beginning of Chapter 5 - but it can be done at any point after that. The lesson gets students to consolidate their knowledge of the novel so far, whilst pushing them to consider how the six major characters and settings develop through the novel. The second half looks at how these links across the text can be used to improve the quality of answers. There is a writing frame and sample paragraph to support this and there is a substantial piece of writing at the end which I use as an interim assessment. The first part of the lesson introduces a quotation tracking resource which is included both on the Powerpoint and as a separate publisher file. This can be returned to throughout the rest of the novel as a way of getting students to develop their ideas from this lesson and develop their understanding of the structure of the novel. There is differentiation built into the lesson with challenge activities being marked with a star. Thanks for your interest.

FREE Lesson 1 of GCSE Speaking and Listening Unit

(0)
This is the first lesson of a unit designed to complete the speaking and listening component for GCSE students in around 6 to 8 lessons. The unit also covers persuasive writing skills needed for the English Language exam and was additionally used as a pre-reading exercise for Animal Farm. However, the unit can easily be adapted to remove the links to this text and stands as a discrete unit in its own right. This first lesson looks at the qualities we would expect to see in successful societies and political leaders. There is an analysis task to complete on a video excerpt of President Obama’s public speaking, which is also included here. If you like the resource, the rest of the unit is available as bundle of six lesson for £3 from my shop. Thanks for taking an interest in my resources.
