Place Value Games

Key Stage 2 (KS2) Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 maths dice games for place value up to millions and decimals to 3 places. Includes games for 4, 5, 6 and 7 digit numbers (thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands and millions) and 1, 2 and 3 decimal places (tenths, hundredths and thousandths). A fun, more challenging and strategic twist on an old idea, these 19 games will make students think carefully about where to place digits, practise their ordering skills, develop interesting tactics and prolong the uncertainty until the final moments. 24 pages, PDF format. Great for starters, early finishers, revision or as a fun homework task Many levels of challenge - ideal for differentiation or for use across year groups Use as printed worksheets or else laminate (or use in dry-wipe sleeves) and complete with whiteboard pens Instead of playing in pairs, you might form small groups - pairs could play against pairs instead of one-versus-one and you might appoint a checker who can adjudicate (and then swap roles for the next game). Consider enlarging to A3 for larger groups. There is a mixture of Make the Biggest Number, Make the Smallest Number and Greater or Less Than games   Every turn, players can place the digit they throw on any row or column, until there are no vacant boxes remaining, prolonging the uncertainty! Keeping an eye on each other’s numbers as they form, players will begin to spot new tactics; for instance they might notice that a 1 placed in a thousands place might not be so costly if there’s a 9 in the ten thousands place, depending on what their opponent is doing on their grid. They can also practise saying their completed numbers aloud at the end.   If you don’t have a 0-9 dice, the games still work with a 1-6 dice. Alternatively: Use 0-9 spinners (I have included black and white and colour templates for your convenience) if you wish to make some Use digit cards (basic digit cards included in the file) Use a pack of playing cards (use Aces as 1 and Jacks as 0, put aside the Kings and Queens; shuffle the pack and take one card in turn)   Instructions are printed on the boards.   Thank you very much for supporting my store.   YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE… Multiplication and Division Activities BUNDLE Maths Puzzles Worksheets HUGE BUNDLE Place Value CrossNumber Puzzles Area and Perimeter Activities BUNDLE   Explore more at FullShelf Resources

Making 100! This is a fun KS2 mental maths starter activity. It’s a complements to 100 Numeracy treasure hunt / scavenger hunt activity - an active printable mental maths team game, with differentiation, ideal as a whole class starter or plenary, originally designed for Year 4 and 5. It can be played multiple times in a lesson or across several lessons as groups can use different card sets each time. Teams complete a treasure hunt-type chain of number bonds to 100 calculations, followed by a ‘Find the Target Number’ mental maths challenge, using a mixture of the four operations. There are 54 double-sided cards, forming sets of 6 cards for 9 teams. A key feature is the chance to involve lower ability pupils in a fun whole class activity to give them a boost of confidence without it being obvious their calculations are less challenging (3 of the sets are at an easier level). Full instructions for teacher and students is included, along with solutions. I have a collection of these Grab the Answers games, each one focusing on a different maths concept. You can explore my growing bundle below. Students collaborate on a treasure hunt type maths trail and when they’ve collected all 5 answers, they are given a target, which they must make using 3 given numbers. You can print and laminate the cards in batches of 3 sets, so if you don’t require them all, you needn’t print them. The cards should be printed double-sided (they’ve been laid out to facilitate this). I print by selecting the ‘2-Sided Short Edge (Top)’ option. However, if you can only print one-sided, print all the even-numbered pages, replace the paper, and print the odd-numbered pages on the back. Give each team their ‘Start’ card. Spread out all other cards, answer side up. You may wish to remove cards from any set not being used, although this is not necessary. On your signal, teams turn over their Start card and complete the calculation. Each team sends one person to collect the correct answer card, on the other side of which will be their next question and a letter to confirm which team it belongs to. Ensure teams immediately replace any cards not marked with their letter. The process continues until the team have answered all five calculations. On the other side of the final answer card will be a target number, which teams must make, using the numbers printed in boxes in the bottom right corner of 3 of their cards. Use all 3 numbers and only once each, using any of the 4 operations. The first to make their target number wins! One possible answer for each of the target challenges is printed on the solution cards. Please visit my store for many fun, time-saving maths activities: FullShelf Resources

This is a Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 Key Stage 2 (KS2) - Y4 / Y5 / Y6. Maths activity for multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000: an engaging, differentiated set of 20 printable spooky gameboards for starters, early finishers activities, revision etc. It’s an aspect of maths that students often forget but after they’ve played a few games of Crazy Doors, with its attractive board and the scenario of being chased by trolls through a swampy forest, it’ll hopefully stick in their mind! Versions with no backgrounds have been included for eco-printing. Great for Halloween - or at any time of the year (as it doesn’t mention Halloween on it). In Scotland, use for Second Level Maths, Primary 5, 6 and 7. SAVE by purchasing this as part of my Halloween Maths BUNDLE, together with a pack of Halloween Hidden Word Maths Puzzles There’s a multiplication and division by 10, 100 and 1000 version and one for lower ability or younger pupils for multiplying and dividing by just 10 and 100. 10 game boards are included for each (it’s the same layout for each board but with different numbers on the doors). Each group of 2-6ish players requires a game board, a Doors Targets board (2 included, one for each version), an instruction card (included), dice, counters and mini whiteboards (or paper) and pens. They throw the dice to make a 2-digit starting number and the aim of the game is to change that number by multiplying/dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 to meet the requirements printed on doors in the forest. If they meet the requirements, they may go through the door. They have to throw a counter onto the Doors Target board to find out what they will be multiplying/dividing by - they’ll need to think about the best one to aim at and then also hope their throwing is accurate or they could get held up at a particular door for a while! This fun activity should also consolidate understanding of place value, including decimals. I’ve added a place value grid for convenience in case any students require this support. I hope your students enjoy playing this. Thank you for your interest in my resources. There are 2 fun crossnumber puzzles for revision of numbers up to 5 digits / ten thousands, 2 puzzles for numbers up to 6 digits / one hundred thousands, and 2 puzzles for numbers up to 7 digits / millions. For each of 5, 6 and 7-digit numbers the first puzzle is for practising reading the word version and writing the digit version in the grid, while the second, more challenging puzzle for each involves adding and subtracting from large numbers (increase by 1000, take away five hundred thousand etc). These more challenging place value mental maths puzzles use a mixture of words and digits for the given calculations, with pupils entering digits in the grid as before. This PDF file contains the 6 puzzles and full solutions. In Scotland, this suits Second Level Maths, Primary 5, 6 and 7. These Numeracy puzzles are an engaging alternative to standard worksheets and should help pupils consolidate their understanding of place value in a fun way. Rounding to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, whole number, 1 decimal place, 2 decimal places and rounding to the nearest pound. These PDF format Maths / Numeracy activities are ideal for early finishers, starters / warm ups, and homework too. Use for revision and consolidation, as part of a place value unit, or for meaningful fun at other times. An engaging alternative to standard worksheets, these Hidden Word puzzles can be completed individually or in pairs / groups. All solutions provided. If you wish, laminate for repeated use and write on them with whiteboard pens. In Scotland, it's ideal for Second Level Maths, Primary 6 and 7. Contains 7 and their solutions: rounding 2-digit numbers to the nearest ten, 3-digit numbers to the nearest hundred, 4-digit numbers to the nearest thousand and various size decimal numbers to the nearest whole number, 1 decimal place and 2 decimal places. Puzzle 7 comes in two versions - rounding to the nearest pound / rounding to the nearest dollar. These puzzles are similar to codebreaker puzzles, with a maths-related word to be revealed after the rounding work. Each puzzle contains a grid. Within each box is a number to be rounded and a letter. Once students have rounded all the numbers, they cross out any boxes containing numbers that round to certain specified target numbers (whether it is to the nearest 10, 1 decimal place etc). Then they put together the letters from the remaining boxes to reveal a maths word. If the word is more simple, the letters are in random order for students to reassemble. If it is a trickier word (such as a famous mathematician), the letters are already placed in the correct order in the grid. There is a further challenge question / task at the bottom of the page linked to the hidden word. The range of puzzles in this resource is ideal for differentiation and revision and / or to cater for a range of groups and classes. ALL ANSWERS INCLUDED. They can be used by individuals or you could have pairs or small groups racing against each other to complete trails accurately. It promotes speed and accuracy and is a more engaging alternative to worksheets. Key Stage 2 (KS2) area printable activities - fun, strategic games of Four in a Row for consolidation and revision of area of rectangles, squares, right-angled triangles and compound / composite shapes. Differentiated 3 ways. Originally designed for Y5 and Y6 but it might suit some older groups (KS3) too. In Scotland, use for Second Level Maths, Primary 6 and 7. The boards were originally designed to be printed in A3 and I recommend this so that children have sufficient space to record the area of each 2D shape. Taking turns to go, children use a different coloured whiteboard pen to write the area of a shape in the appropriate box on the grid. If using the same colour as their opponent, they could add their initial to the box. When someone achieves 4 in a row, answers could be checked using the ANSWER GRIDS, or by using a calculator. 1-star version - area of rectangles, squares and right-angled triangles. No conversion required. 2-star - area of rectangles, squares and right-angled triangles. More challenging calculations. Some conversion required between centimetres, metres etc. Includes decimal lengths and breadths. 3-star - area of rectangles, squares, right-angled triangles and compound / composite shapes. Some conversion required. Includes decimal lengths and breadths and more challenging calculations. Some of the compound shapes require children to work out the length of a side, using other given sides, before they can work out the area. Children will be able to do some of the calculations mentally but could work out more challenging ones before writing in the answer on the grid. Scale Drawings / Scale Factors

(1)
KS2 (Year 5 / Year 6 - Y5 and Y6) Scale Drawings Maths Game: An engaging and differentiated game to consolidate understanding of scale drawing / scale factors in a fun way. It’s also an enjoyable way of practising times tables (if using the standard version) or decimal multiplication (if using the Challenge version). The children act as engineers, working their way around the board using scale drawings (24 cards included) and throwing a counter onto a target to discover which scale - in ratio notation - to apply each time, once they have made a measurement of the drawing. Teaching Notes and Pupil Instruction Card included. Differentiation: Alongside the standard version there’s a Challenge Version for older/more able learners that requires pupils to deal with decimal lengths (a second set of 24 cards included) and to convert between cm, m and km, using a separate scale target board when scaling up. I recommend blowing the gameboards up to A3 for use with bigger groups although A4 would be fine. I suggest printing the cards on different coloured paper to help keep sets separate, especially if using both versions with different groups. The Scale Target boards are colourful so black and white versions are included should you prefer. I hope your pupils enjoy playing it. If you can spare a moment I would be grateful for a review. There are 72 self-checking maths trails (36 up to 6 digit numbers and 36 up to 7 digit numbers) to make into reusable activity boards or simply print as worksheets (versions also included without the final answer). Ideal as main lesson tasks, starters, early finishers, home learning, homework and revision. PDF format. (In Scotland, this suits Second Level Maths, Primary 6 and 7.) A fun activity that can be used as a competitive game or an individual challenge Differentiation: In addition to there being 2 different levels here (up to 6 or 7 digits), the last 6 trails in each set (trails 31-36) are a little less challenging than the first 30, helping less able students to experience success without drawing attention to the level Print as many A4 boards as you require (printing on card recommended), laminate for regular use and have students complete trails with whiteboard pens Consider printing and/or laminating back-to-back to save resources A5 worksheet versions of the trails (two trails per A4 page) are included with the answer removed, which you might want to use for classwork or homework without laminating Separate final answer key versions included (for use with worksheet versions) Full answer versions also included for speedy checking by student or teacher if required Alternatively students could use a calculator to help them see where they have gone wrong. Students love using these trails, fixing any errors for themselves. They could work in pairs or individually and choose whether to time themselves or race against their friends.   How do they work? The trails each feature 12 addition and subtraction calculations (practising a variety of vocabulary for the operations) to consolidate place value. A start and end number are printed on each card, so students can work from left to right down the rows, adding and subtracting different size numbers, until they reach the end, where they can check if they arrived at the correct final number.   These trails are available alongside other place value games and activities for large numbers and decimal numbers in a popular bundle: KS2 Place Value Activities Bundle   Some of my other popular KS2 Maths / Numeracy resources: Mental Maths Bundle Multiplication / Division Bundle   Please visit FullShelf Resources to explore more. Mental Maths Tests KS2

2 Resources
Key Stage 2 starter or warm up activities for Year 4, 5 and 6 maths lessons. This bundle contains 30 mental maths tests or quizzes on PowerPoint presentations for KS2 for regular use throughout the year. No prep! Ideal for differentiation, there are 15 tests at both of the two levels. Each test contains 20 question slides and 20 answer slides. You could use them as part of SATs preparation, as daily / weekly mental starter activities or as part of revision lessons. **Contains: ** SET A: 15 Tests originally designed for Year 5 and 6 SET B: 15 Tests originally designed for Year 4 (and will suit some Year 3) You could use a mixture of the two levels for differentiation in the same class. Please check the individual resource descriptions and previews to check if this will meet your needs. Children enjoy trying to beat their previous best score. These informal tests are split across 6 PowerPoints and are designed to be shown on the whiteboard, with children recording answers in jotters or on paper. In each quiz there’s one question to a slide so children can focus on it for a few seconds before the next one comes up. The question slides are plain and uncluttered to minimise distractions. You can run the PowerPoint presentation on a timer if you wish - alternatively click it on yourself, perhaps allowing a little longer for more challenging questions. Each test features 20 calculations involving a variety of mathematical skills and knowledge. At the end of each test, there follows the same 20 slides repeated, with the answer added clearly. Children can mark their own or a partner’s work to cut down on your workload. If short of time, you can whizz through the answers but each answer appearing with its question like this allows for important discussions about strategies. Concepts include: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, Times Tables, Doubling and Halving, Negative Numbers, Multiplying and Dividing by 10 and 100, Place Value, Decimals, Percentages, Fractions, Money, Measure (including Area and Perimeter, Time, Length), Angles. Additional dollar versions of all 3 PowerPoints are included, where I have amended any questions involving pounds and pence to suit countries using dollars.
