INSTRUCTIONS: Two children (or two pairs of children) take it in turns to write an answer in a box. Ideally they use a different colour whiteboard pen, however if this is not possible they could add an initial or symbol each time too. First to get 4 in a row - vertically, horizontally or diagonally - is the winner. The games work especially well if students roll a dice to determine which column they should answer a question from. The columns are numbered 1-6. If the column is already completed, they could either miss a go or roll again. You can find previews and more information about each resource that is included in this bundle if you click on them but here are some details: CHANGE FOR £20 2 standard game boards and 2 lower ability boards. Children roll dice to find out which column they can do a calculation in and then must work out the change required for £20 for one of the items pictured and priced in that column. Children write on the change using different colour whiteboard pens or add their initials. All answers included. DOUBLES AND HALVES 10 boards to consolidate doubling and halving of two and three digit numbers. Includes a one-star version of both the doubling and halving game for younger or lower ability pupils - sidebars are included, featuring all answers, which children can strike through when used. It’s also included without the answer sidebars in case your pupils don’t need this added support. This version focuses on lower 2-digit numbers and multiples of 10. Then there’s four different, more challenging versions of both the doubling and halving boards (two and three-star versions). All answers included. Play as the money game above. AREA 3 differentiated boards: One-star version - area of rectangles, squares and right-angled triangles. No conversion required. Two-star version – as above but with more challenging calculations. Some conversion required between centimetres, metres etc. Includes decimal lengths and breadths. Three-star version - area of rectangles, squares, right-angled triangles and compound shapes. Some of the compound shapes require children to work out the length of a side, using other given sides, before they can work out the area. Children will be able to do some of the calculations mentally but could use paper or mini whiteboards to work out the more challenging ones before writing in the answer on the grid. TIMES TABLES 4 Times Table Boards in colour and black and white versions. All 4 available in LA supported versions (with answer sideboards), standard version (2-9 times tables) and in a version with 11 and 12 times tables added. Use whiteboard pens as in the games above. DECIMAL PLACE VALUE Consolidate place value to 2 or 3 decimal places. 2 differentiated boards: The 1 star board was originally designed to go with the cards to 2 decimal places, while the more challenging 2 star version was designed for the cards to 3 decimal places. However, both sets of cards would work with either board. For use with this game are two sets of 54 decimal number cards featuring numbers from 0.001 to 2.01 (1 set includes numbers up to 2 decimal places, the other up to 3 decimal places). KS2 Year 5 and Year 6 differentiated Maths warm up activities for the whole class! Printable mental maths scavenger or treasure hunt style games, with differentiation, ideal as whole class active starters or plenaries, especially in Y5 and Y6, to get students moving and working collaboratively. There are 6 hunt / relay race sets in this great value BUNDLE, each focusing on a different concept: 1. Adding and Subtracting Decimals 2. Dividing with Multiples of 10, 100, 1000 3. Multiplying 3 Numbers 4. Number Bonds to 100 / Making 100 5. Fractions of Quantities / Amounts 6. Percentages of Quantities / Amounts Each game can be played multiple times in a lesson or across several lessons as groups can use different card sets each time. Teams complete a treasure hunt-type chain of calculations, followed by a ‘Find the Target Number’ mental maths challenge, using a mixture of the four operations. In each game there are 54 double-sided cards, forming sets of 6 cards for 9 teams. A key feature is the chance to involve lower ability students in a fun whole class activity to give them a boost of confidence without it being obvious their calculations are less challenging (3 of the sets are at an easier level). Full instructions for teacher and students is included, along with solutions. Students collaborate on a treasure hunt type maths trail and when they’ve collected all 5 answers, they are given a target, which they must make using 3 given numbers. You can print and laminate the cards in batches of 3 sets, so if you don’t require them all, you needn’t print them. The cards should be printed double-sided (they’ve been laid out to facilitate this). I print by selecting the ‘2-Sided Short Edge (Top)’ option. However, if you can only print one-sided, print all the even-numbered pages, replace the paper, and print the odd-numbered pages on the back. Give each team their ‘Start’ card. Spread out all other cards, answer side up. You may wish to remove cards from any set not being used, although this is not necessary. On your signal, teams turn over their Start card and complete the calculation. Each team sends one person to collect the correct answer card, on the other side of which will be their next question and a letter to confirm which team it belongs to. Ensure teams immediately replace any cards not marked with their letter. The process continues until the team have answered all five calculations. On the other side of the final answer card will be a target number, which teams must make, using the numbers printed in boxes in the bottom right corner of 3 of their cards. Use all 3 numbers and only once each, using any of the 4 operations. The first to make their target number wins! One possible answer for each of the target challenges is printed on the solution cards. Great for starters and early finishers, this Mental Maths / Arithmetic Upper Key Stage 2 Big Bundle contains 3 resource packs (Year 5 / 6) and 3 Lower KS2 resource packs (Year 4 / 3), great for differentiation in the same class. A total of 30 PowerPoint Speed Tests, 432 Self-Check Cards and 16 Cross Number Puzzles for regular practice throughout the year. The Lower Key Stage 2 resources were originally designed for Y4 (Primary 5 and other equivalents) but would also suit some Y3 (Primary 4) classes too once the concepts have been covered. One question to a slide will allow children to focus for a few seconds before the next one comes up. The question slides are plain and uncluttered so as to minimise distractions. Run the PowerPoint presentation on a timer or click it on yourself, perhaps allowing a little longer for more challenging questions. Each test features 20 questions involving a variety of mathematical skills and knowledge. At the end of each test, the same 20 slides are repeated, this time with the answer added clearly. Children can then mark their own or a partner’s work to reduce your workload. If short of time, you can whizz through the answers but the idea of each answer appearing with its question like this is that it allows for important discussions about strategies. SELF-CHECK CARDS A flexible resource that can be incorporated into many mental maths games and activities within the classroom, especially oral starters. Laminate and use again and again as starter and early finisher tasks. There are twelve calculations on each A4 sheet. Leave them as 18 A4 sheets or cut each of the question cards separately to create 216 cards. There are versions both with and without the answers printed below the questions. The with-answers versions could be used by pupils questioning each other while the version without the answers could be used by individuals testing themselves. A separate answer card is included, which individuals could consult. CROSSNUMBER PUZZLES A fun resource for early finisher tasks, mental starters, homework etc. They could be completed by individuals or in pairs or small groups, where they will promote important discussions about different mental strategies. As in a crossword puzzle, children will find it easier to work out some of the more challenging questions once they have filled in the easier ones as some digits will already be there for them. The 36 cards form a continuous loop so it doesn’t matter which one you start with. There are 3 versions – the first has an analog clock, the second has a digital clock, while the third version features French 24-hour time. Active Oral Game: Ideal for the whole class. Print and laminate the cards. Students walk around the room, asking and answering what time it is in French, using the time printed on their cards. The first pair to find the matching cards wins. There are 2 versions: an analog clock version for 12-hour time and a digital one you can use for 24-hour time. Serpents et Echelles Board Game: Print and laminate the board. It works like normal Chutes and Ladders / Snakes and Ladders, only with students calling out French words when they land on them. Answer key included. Sentences Board Game: Fun for oral practice. Board 1 is a simpler, 12-hour digital version, just in quarter hour intervals. Board 2 is for analog 12-hour time in 5 minute intervals and board 3 is for 24-hour time. Print and laminate. Instructions on board. Answer key included. Square Jigsaw: Laminate and cut the 16 puzzle pieces or have students cut up the black and white version. Similar to codebreaker puzzles, a maths-related word is revealed after completing calculations. Each puzzle contains a grid. Within each box is a calculation and a letter. Students circle any boxes containing errors. Then they assemble letters from the circled boxes to reveal the hidden maths word. (In the rounding puzzle students find the numbers that don’t round to specified target numbers and in some of the fractions puzzles, students must find non-equivalent fractions etc). In many puzzles there is an extension question / challenge linked to the hidden word, which on some may require a little research if time. Students often forget or avoid checking their work for errors so it’s great to get them carefully checking in these puzzles.
