In this 16 slide powerpoint, I have selected 4 key quotations for each poem to annotate in detail with a focus on all 3 areas of assessment:
A01: meanings
A02: analysis of methods
A03: Context/Themes
This lesson is repeatable in the run up to the exam to revise all 60 quotations and their various layers of meaning. I have also included an answer sheet on A3 paper with all the slides on one page.
How it works:
Show students the 4 quotations and give them time to annotate them then reveal the teacher answers to compare.
The teacher annotations are animated and appear one by one on the mouse click so you can talk through them.
A successful lesson that doesn’t require any photocopying!
Inspired by the image of the old man in the 2018 AQA English Language exam, I have collated and categorised 275 words to describe a face onto a worksheet to help students with their descriptive writing.
Students found this useful in helping them to improve the precision of their characters descriptions for English Language Paper 1.

This sheet contains information so students can annotate over 90 key quotations from the text.
It should be noted that this was created for a fairly low ability class to help students who had missed a significant number of lessons to catch up. The annotations are not perceptive enough for students aiming for grades 7-9. They will nevertheless still offer a solid grounding for higher ability students to then explore the quotations further.
The resource tells them the page number of each key quote so students must practise their scanning skills to find the quotation to highlight. Then students write the brief note beside each quotation to explain why it is important.
The page numbers correspond to the Heinemann edition. Check the preview to ensure the page numbers correspond to the copy of the text you are using in class.

Essential A3 revision sheets on 6 characters from Romeo and Juliet
These 3 sheets have been created with the closed book AQA examination in mind. They contain key quotations from Romeo and Juliet in short easy-to-remember chunks. There is also a third revision sheet on 4 supporting characters (Friar, Nurse, Capulet, Mercutio)
My students really enjoyed highlighting and colour coding the revision sheet to demonstrate their understanding.
The sheets have 4 levels of difficulty:
Bronze: Identify where the quotations come from in the play.
Silver: Work out which themes each quotation links to.
Gold: Identify language features within each quote.
Diamond: Link each quotation to context.
Complete lesson which gives guidance on how to annotate 15 key quotations from Chapter 5. Also includes a starter, plot summary activity, and guidance on analysing the 3 most significant quotations from the chapter in more depth. Ends with a discussion question on the effectiveness of Ralph’s leadership.
Full lesson with starter, chapter summary task and notes to help students annotate 15 key quotations from Chapter 6 following by a task encouraging students to look for deeper inferences in the 5 most important quotations in the chapter.
Detailed lesson that guides students through annotating the key lines in Act 1 Scene 4. There is also a starter, comprehension questions, sample paragraph analysing the ‘stars hide your fires’ quotation and extended writing activities based on the scene with a modelled example.
A complete ready to teach lesson that includes a differentiated starter, detailed line by line animated annotations of the full scene following by comprehension questions to text students’ understanding of the annotations.
A range of high grade Macbeth exam responses.
All responses were written to reflect the ability of grade 8/9 students working under timed conditions.
Marking is subjective but as an experienced examiner, I am confident all of these responses would, in my opinion, fit into the top band because all 6 contain thorough (and at times perceptive) debate with the nuances of the question supported by thorough and at times perceptive analysis of methods and wider ideas supported by fine-grained analysis of judicious quotations.
Lesson on similes, metaphors, and personifications with worksheet and PowerPoint.
Includes 5 activities and extension tasks.
Update: I have added a complete lesson PowerPoint.
A lesson for exploring Storm on the Island in the Power and Conflict AQA anthology.
Step 1: Students use the hint questions to prompt them to gain an independent understanding of the poem.
Step 2: Read through the answer and complete.
Step 3: Questions to test understanding of new annotations.
Step 4: Review by creating thesis statement about Heaney’s purpose.
Essential to help with the closed book poetry exam, this revision sheet contains 5 key quotations from each poem in the Power and Conflict section of the anthology. It asks students to make notes on the significance of each quotation.
Also includes an answer sheet for teachers with some notes about why I selected each quotation.
Also includes an audio/video recording of the answers.
Also includes a blank grid for students who want to select their own 5 quotations to memorise for the closed book examination. Students must write a brief note to explain why each note is important. It is a useful exercise for making students revise their annotations.
Over 10 worksheets to support the teaching of Kamikaze and Emigree from the power and conflict section of the AQA poetry anthology.
