A 45 slide lesson that teaches students how to identify and comment on the effect of semantic fields in the short extract that is used for AQA Paper 1 Question 2 and Paper 2 Question 3.
There are 6 extracts to work through as students develop the skill to identify a pattern of words within each extract.
Commenting on a semantic field allows students to make a more sophisticated comment about the effect of language than merely commenting on individual words in isolation.
I have abridged the whole novella of A Christmas Carol into 28 very short extracts to help struggling readers to access the text on one A3 sheet. I have had to use font size 8 to fit it all onto one sheet. For students who require a larger font, I also have included a second version in font size 12 and comic sans.
Each extract comes with a question to check for understanding.
A lesson revising key themes and quotations for Macbeth and A Christmas Carol. It goes over 6 themes in each text in detail. Students fill in the grid as the teacher goes through the PowerPoint and make notes.
Also contains detailed analysis of 6 quotations for each theme in both texts for students to takeaway with them to revise.
Lesson exploring the importance of Fezziwig in the novel.
There is a differentiated starter with answers followed by analysis of 8 quotations. Once again possible answers are provided.
Then students attempt to write an analytical paragraph using one or more of the quotations.
Complete lesson analysing Act 4 Scene 3 from Macbeth. Includes a starter activity, scene summary, 9 slides of line by line annotations for this extended scene and analytical questions (covering how Scotland and Macbeth are presented in the scene) to test understanding of the annotations.
Also contains a revision sheet on the character of Macduff.
PowerPoint to guide students through Act 3 Scene 2 of Macbeth.
Includes a scene summary, annotations of the scene, comprehension questions based on the annotations and then an extension activity analysing the use of animal imagery with an example paragraph as a guide.
A complete ready to teach lesson that includes a differentiated starter, detailed line by line animated annotations of the full scene following by comprehension questions to text students’ understanding of the annotations.
Lesson introducing the character of Squealer.
It starts by looking at adjectives to describe Squealer and his function of the play.
Then students make inferences about 11 Squealer quotations and then compare their explanations to my teacher explanations.
The lesson is aimed at a mid ability class. However, there are some concepts aimed more at higher ability students such as obfuscation and gas-lighting and contextual links to Molotov and Pravda that can be explored in greater depth with higher-ability classes.
A description writing lesson based on the Tempest.
Students complete exercises which encourages them to make conscious choices about their sentence lengths, sentence types, sentence openers and use of punctuation.
