A timeline activity for The Butterfly Lion which covers the key events from the whole novel. This activity is perfect for deepening pupils’ understanding of Michael Morpurgo’s prize-winning novel.
Resources provided:
• Key events cards
• Timeline template
• Answer sheet
Give this timeline activity to small groups, pairs or individual pupils to complete to consolidate pupils’ understanding of the text. This is particularly important as the story is non-linear, being told through a series of flashbacks, so this activity challenges pupils to order the events chronologically, thus deepening their understanding of the narrative.
An additional activity has been provided as an extension if necessary.
All resources are available as PDFs and editable Word documents.

Pupils practise changing direct speech to reported speech using these differentiated worksheets based on events from the refugee novel Oranges in No Man’s Land by Elizabeth Laird.
A conversation from Chapter 8 of the novel, when Ayesha escapes from the militiamen with the help of the mysterious old man Abu Boutros, must be changed from direct to reported speech.
Direct speech is speech which is reported by using the exact words that the speaker used and includes the use of inverted commas (otherwise known as speech marks or quotation marks). Reported speech (otherwise known as indirect speech) tells you what someone said but does not use the person’s actual words.
This activity has been differentiated three ways to cater to a range of ability levels in the classroom.
Answers have been provided.
The resources come as PDF documents.

A character sort activity involving the main characters in the book The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo.
Pupils must sort the cards to match the name of the character, a brief description, a picture of the character and a quote about the character from the text.
The activity can be made less challenging by removing one of the categories, such as the quotations, from the sort. The number of characters can also be altered to suit the needs of the pupils. The activity can be carried out in small groups, pairs or individually.
This resource is a useful reminder to pupils about the names and roles of the characters in the story to help pupils to understand the novel as they read.
The characters are listed in order of appearance in the novel and split onto three separate groups, so that teachers can choose which characters to include in the sorting activity, avoiding spoilers.
• Group A: Chapters 1 and 2
• Group B: Chapters 3 and 5
• Group C: Chapter 7
This resource comes as a PDF and as an easily editable Word document.

Pupils must match up the two parts of sentences from the text that have been cut in two. Five sentence matching activities are provided, one for each chapter of The Iron Man novel by Ted Hughes.
After reading each chapter of the novel, in pairs, pupils match up the beginning of the sentence with the correct ending, reading them aloud to check that they sound complete.

• Encourages pupils to discuss how they know which parts to put together
• Leads to pupils to spot patterns in sentence structure
• Gives the opportunity for pupils to re-read sentences many times over
• Helps pupils attune their ears to the sound of a sentence
• Helps children recall the events of the story
• Provides the opportunity for children to pay close attention to the grammar of sentences including tense
• Helps pupils recognise sentences in their own writing in order to demarcate them using the correct punctuation
All resources come as easily editable Word documents and as PDFs.
Answers for all 5 sentence matching activities are provided.
