A KS1 history lesson which explains to children what firefighters are like now to draw comparisons to the 1600s. From the first session of this unit the children know how firefighters were not established in 1600s London and where they did exist they made little impact due to poor equipment. This lesson looks at firefighters now and the impact they have on modern day as well as comparing them to the 1600s.

London in the 1600s was a booming place which was coping with a new, larger population. Due to this the streets were crammed and often buildings made out of timber, creating the seeds to the Great Fire. The invention of factories as well as mass producing different goods meant that society changed exponentially. The smaller settlements that had developed in the past were soon left to bigger cities and towns, meaning houses changed. Houses were made in main cities and towns with brick, since it was mass produced.

The Celts mainly lived in small settlements in homes which were called roundhouses. The outside of the Celts’ homes were made from stone or wood depending on where in the UK they lived. Most Celts were hunter gatherers so their lives were basic and didn’t have the luxuries that we have today. This lesson is key in establishing to children that in the past other people did not have the technology that we have today and in the past people mainly farmed and gathered their food.

Neil initially showed an interest in flying when he was younger and joined the Naval Air Force when older to pursue this interest. Ernest tried to reach the South Pole on many occasions but failed. His most famous attempt was in 1915 aboard the Endurance but his ship got stuck in the ice. Heroically, Ernest and his colleagues managed to reach mainland safe.
