GCSE FRENCH KS4 FRENCH KS3 FRENCH PERFECT TENSE CONJUGATION PRACTICE featuring 25 high-frequency French -ER verbs My students really like this kind of grammar activity, as they like to work and learn independently, which is a successful way of varying teaching and learning methodologies - I’ve found it’s really important to avoid predominantly teacher-led learning in the languages classroom. There are 150 conjugations across 3 differentiated conjugation challenges with complete answer key. The workbook focuses on the mechanics of conjugation, rather than usage, but I find it useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb conjugation. For example, language learners do often try to conflate what they know about grammar in their first language with the language they are learning, and with students whose first language is English, I frequently see students confusing the use of the auxiliaries avoir and être for example. Students do need to to have a good grasp of the auxiliary verbs in the present tense to ensure that they can form the perfect tense accurately. In terms of the past participle, students begin to be able to predict it accurately, the more they see it, and construct it. I also refer frequently the differences in usage between English and French in the perfect tense, which are quite significant. The resource is structured as follows: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: French-English and English-French Three conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations: Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in French across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation Conjugation Challenge 2: gives the infinitive of each verb in French, specifying the target pronoun. My German students really enjoy word searches, as they tend like to learn independently and work their way through the increasing challenges. These German Christmas word searches are a real winner - the Christmas-theme is always a great motivator. There are 33 German Christmas words, including a selection of more generic Christmas words, and also some which are very German-specific, such as Sankt Nikolaus and Knecht Ruprecht. Students shouldn’t attempt to learn all the vocabulary at once, as the objective of the word searches is to engage with German Christmas vocabulary, to really focus on the individual words, genders and articles, and to have lots of practice at general recall, writing and spelling. The German Christmas vocabulary list is ideal as a long-term reference resource, and really useful for students when they are working more creatively and independently, for example***German Christmas reading comprehension, German Christmas writing activities*** and so on. There is an increasing challenge through the grids, and the differentiation does ensure that all students are challenged. There are 5 German to German grids, with a vocabulary list to complete for additional consolidation. There are also 5 English to German grids, also with a vocabulary list to complete, which is a great way to really work on students’ recall and spelling. Students can identify the level of challenge by the increasing size of the grid, number of words to search for, and the direction the words appear in, which they can see by the direction of the arrows at the top of the grids. I’ve put a couple of extra challenges in too, to encourage students to look really carefully at the words - for example, they may have to find candles and work out what that is in German - only the prompt die Adventskerze appears in the reference list. Answer keys are essential in my view, and I always give them to students. Not only are they a great teacher-time saver, they give students an additional opportunity to engage with language, and help them develop more independence in their learning. If you can, laminate the answer keys, and distribute amongst small groups of students during classtime - they will definitely last for years. It’s useful to give the book to advanced KS3 French students too, as it provides a language road map with learning goals, outlining the adjectives they should ideally know by a specific stage in their learning. I create a lot of language learning reference books for my languages students, they’re really popular with my students, who like to have a bank of reference resources for both initial learning and longer-term learning and revision. There are 22 pages in the book, and all 400 adjectives are listed alphabetically French-English. Each adjective is also shown in the masculine, feminine, singular and plural forms, which my students find really helpful as they begin to engage with gender agreement in French. I use the reference book for quick vocabulary quizzes too - either I or a nominated student shouts out a French or English adjective, with teams giving the corresponding French or English adjective - I’ve found this is a really successful way of avoiding more formal vocabulary tests, while still providing students with frequent opportunity to refresh and embed essential French vocabulary. Please read the Terms of Use. My younger students love to see Spanish displays in the classroom, and they also work really well for older beginner Spanish learners too. There are 25 fruits and 25 vegetables, definite article, feminine and masculine, singular and plural, which is a very useful tool for promoting discussion about the concept of gender in Spanish. I vary my Spanish classroom displays quite regularly, and have different posters up at various times of the school year. We use them as speaking and pronunciation prompts, and for guessing games too. We don’t actually learn 25 fruits or vegetables at this stage, but I use a range that includes some that children may not know yet, such as starfruit and aubergines. That’s ideal for discussing healthy eating, and for generally developing children’s vocabulary in their own language too. The posters work really well as flashcards too, and they’re great for introducing and practising language with a ‘low-tech’ method, giving us all a break from the whiteboard, which children definitely enjoy! There are lots of games and activities to play, and I’ve described several that are successful with my groups. I’ve found that giving students regular and frequent opportunities to play with the cards, not only when we’re focusing on these particular vocab groups, but across the school year, and even when they’re far more advanced in their learning - all learners benefit from going back to the start! There’s definitely some prep involved - printing, laminating and cutting out - laminating is certainly worth the effort, as the cards are a lot more learner-friendly, and do last for years. Students don’t have to play with full sets - they can work with selected vocab groups. There is an 18-page workbook for each set, which gives students a different way of consolidating their vocabulary - writing it out really helps to embed language, and is great for spelling too. There are 3 differentiated recall and write challenges, as well as a full alphabetical French-English vocabulary list, which works well as a longer-term reference resource too. My students learn a lot from applying their French practically with the game card templates - they enjoy creating cards for each other. I use the workbook for homework, holiday work, practice and revision or sub lessons - they’re really versatile. Written Recall Challenge One: students write the English word / phrase from a French prompt, with all the words and phrases grouped together in the same category Written Recall Challenge Two: with this challenge, students write the words / phrases in French from an English prompt, and again, they’re all group together in the same category Written Recall Challenge Three: this final challenge ‘switches’ at each question from French to English, and lists words and phrases randomly from each category - I’ve found that this really does encourage my students to think hard about their French vocab. For pair or small-group work, students can work in a designated area. This really helps them focus closely on the language, and helps learners who are slightly less confident working with a larger group. The games and activities are a really successful alternative to more traditional 'vocabulary drilling' exercises. Students can work independently of the teacher, challenging themselves and each other in their best German accent to find all the matching verbs cards in German and English. The card templates allow students to apply their German knowledge practically and creatively, as they put together mini-quiz cards for each other, preferably from memory. There are three differentiated recall challenges: Written Recall Challenge One students write the English verbs from a German prompt, with all the verbs in alphabetical order, German-English. Written Recall Challenge Two again, students write the verbs in English from a German prompt, but the German verbs are now in random, rather than alphabetical order. Language learners often learn or are familiar with new vocabulary in a particular order, so it increases the recall challenge by changing that order. Written Recall Challenge Three the final challenge requires students to write the corresponding German verb from an English prompt. The English verbs are also in random order. This challenge really helps with vocabulary recall, which is quite challenging when vocabulary does not appear in the context of a sentence. It's really useful for spelling in German too. I’ve found having the posters in my classroom provides an instant introduction to the Spanish-speaking world. They’re also great for reading, speaking and pronunciation prompts too. I often ask ‘quick questions’ such as ***¿Cuál es la capital de…?***, or ¿Sí o no? Madrid es la capital de Paraguay? - there are lots of questioning and speaking opportunities, using the posters as visual prompts. Speaking does tend to be quite a challenging skill, particularly for beginner Spanish learners, so getting the most from classroom decor to encourage students to speak is really important - they’re a great tool for encouraging students to speak, and to construct sentences, from the very beginning of their Spanish learning. I’ve also found that there can be several (or more!) countries that students don’t actually know, or have never heard of, and the posters are really useful for helping them develop their general understanding and knowledge of the wider world. There are two backgrounds to choose from: Spanish flag or black wave. Laminate them if you can, as they hang really well, are easier to manipulate as flashcards, and definitely last in great condition for years. Please read the Terms of Use carefully. 500 high-frequency French verbs, listed alphabetically both French-English and English-French - a great learning support resource for KS4 French moving into advanced French learners, and can also be given to advanced KS3 French students, providing a language road map with learning goals, outlining the verbs they should ideally know by a specific stage in their learning. There are 42 pages in the book, and all 500 verbs are listed alphabetically French-English and English-French. Verbs that are conjugated with the auxiliary être verb are indicated by (être) following the particular verb. The books are ideal for***KS4 French*** students, and as a refresher and verb audit for those moving into advanced level A Level French. For UK teachers, these are roughly GCSE / Standard / age 16 examinations moving into advanced level, all examination boards (AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas, SQA). We use the Notes and Next Steps template to think about progress and vocabulary knowledge. Students find this really useful, and do like to map and track their own progress. It can be helpful in guiding and informing whole-group discussion about learning and progress in general, which is a really useful learning activity too - students also note down any new French verbs they learn, enabling them to build a really comprehensive verb vocabulary reference resource. French-speaking countries, capital cities and flags game cards provide great cross-curricular learning opportunities for any appropriate age group, at any time of the school year. Students can develop their language skills, as well as their knowledge of both the French-speaking and wider world, in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. The set features 41 countries / territories where French is an official language, with each picture card showing the continent and national flag, and the corresponding text card detailing continent, country and capital city. There is a set of detachable continent, country and capital city labels. Labelling is a really successful and popular learning activity. There may be a number of countries and capital cities that students do not know, or are not aware of, so the games help them fully develop their general awareness, knowledge and understanding of Les pays francophones. I’ve used the definite article, as I’ve found that this helps embed the concept of gender in French, and that proper nouns, such as countries, are subject to gender agreement rules too. There is a country, capital city and flag reference list of all countries and capital cities, including the continent on which each is located. Students find it useful to read this through before playing I generally allow them only 60 seconds on a timer to really focus their reading and increase the sense of competition if we are playing competitive team games. I’ve described a range of popular games and activities in the product pack. The list can also be used as a year-round reference resource, which students can file in their workbooks or learning files. Laminate the cards and reference sheets if you can - it’s really worth the extra prep time and expense, as they’re far more learner-friendly, and remain in excellent condition for years. My students really like this kind of grammar activity, as they like to work and learn independently, which is a successful way of varying teaching and learning methodologies - I’ve found it’s really important to avoid predominantly teacher-led learning in the languages classroom. French reflexive verbs can be quite tricky, particularly for students whose first language does not have a similar reflexive verb group. The workbooks focus on formation and conjugation, rather than usage, though it’s definitely useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb formation and conjugation. Language learners do often try to conflate what they know about grammar in their first language with the grammar of the language they are learning, and students whose first language is English often use the auxiliary avoir instead of être with the passé composé for example. Students do need to to have a good grasp of the auxiliary verb être in the present tense to ensure that they can form the perfect tense in French accurately. In terms of the past participle, students begin to be able to predict it accurately, the more they see it, and construct it. French reflexive verbs tend to require additional practice for learners with English as a first language - firstly, the correct reflexive pronoun, and secondly, its location within a clause or sentence in relation to the pronoun and verbs. With l’imparfait, I often see students using j’étais me lever, je m’étais lever or even j’étais se lever instead of je me levais as a translation of I was getting up. There are specific differences in usage between English and French with this tense, and I do always discuss this with students about this when we’re using the workbooks - I tend to work fairly simultaneously with le passé composé and l’imparfait, because students are better able to understand correct usage when they look at a range of past tense contexts together, for example I have got up, I got up, I was getting up, I used to get up. Though the workbooks focus on formation / conjugation, rather than usage, I do always discuss these kinds of issues with students about this when we’re using the workbooks. I’ve found that this kind of conjugation practice workbook really helps students to***recognise and predict*** conjugation patterns. Though the workbooks focus solely on the correct conjugation of verbs, and does not look at word order in the context of full sentences, there are conjugation patterns that students can learn, recognise and apply, ensuring that their spoken and written French is accurate, and that their understanding of French across the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing is robust. Students become very familiar and confident the more they work with conjugation, and these quick conjugations certainly help to embed that successfully. The tenses are: present tense (le présent) perfect tense (le passé composé) imperfect tense (l’imparfait) Each set has the following structure: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: French-English and English-French. Three conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations: Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in French across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation. Conjugation Challenge 2: gives the infinitive of each verb in French, specifying the target pronoun. Students write the corresponding verb conjugation in French. Conjugation Challenge 3: students write the corresponding French verb conjugation, and its infinitive, from an English prompt. Notes and Next Steps template which students visit regularly - it really does encourage them to think about where they are now, how confident they feel, and what they might need to work on a little more to be absolutely sure of their conjugation skills. We also note down any new verbs we meet, which enables students to build up their own verb vocabulary bank. It’s a great tool to guide and inform whole-group discussion about learning and progress in general, which is a really successful and popular activity. answer key: 6-page booklet which is absolutely essential in my view. Answer keys help students develop more independence in their learning, and provide them with an additional opportunity to engage with language and grammar. They also genuinely enjoy correcting their own - and particularly each others’ - work. Mots cachés are a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word in French, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This mini-bundle features two sets of 10 differentiated word searches & answer keys, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. The focus is on key beginner French vocabulary: = les jours de la semaine : the days of the week = les mois et les saisons de l’année : months & seasons of the year In each set, there are 5 French to French grids, where students are prompted with French words, and look for them in French in the grid. For additional consolidation, each grid also features an English word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test. There are also 5 English to French grids, where the prompt words are given in English, and students have to find the French equivalent in the grid. For additional consolidation and practice in writing in French, they also complete the French word list on each page. Students can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on each grid. There is an answer key for each word search, so that learners can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. The word searches are in landscape format, as this mirrors the common direction of reading from left to right in English and French, facilitating learner engagement with the word searches. Answer keys are an essential and integral element of the learning activity: they provide students with an additional opportunity to engage with language, also helping them develop more independence in their learning. The repetitive nature of the questions and answers, supported by the visual prompt of the clock faces, makes it perfect for practicing, reinforcing & refreshing how to tell time in French. It’s a whole-group communicative game, with a multi-skill focus on speaking, listening, reading, vocabulary-building and developing accurate pronunciation. The game really does help to create a lively language learning environment, and is a great alternative to more traditional ‘drilling’ activities. This bundle features 3 separate games sets, each with a particular range of clock times - across the three sets, every single analog clock time is used. There are four cards per 8.5 x 11 page - I always make sure that font and text size is fairly large for beginner French and Primary French learners, as it’s essential that the text - and therefore language - is fully accessible. In the Primary French classroom, we do often have learners who are just beginning to learn how to tell time in their first language, so it’s really important to make learning French manageable in my view. There’s definitely some prep involved - printing, laminating and cutting out - but it’s definitely worth the extra time, as the cards are a lot more learner-friendly when they are sturdier, and they last for years too.
