CVC Words-1st letter-Scavenger Hunt Fun for Reception

Make reading CVC words fun by using this easy-prep phonics scavenger hunt activity. Your Reception pupils will work individually, in pairs or small groups and use their decoding and blending skills to read and match words and pictures, write the matching letters, find the mystery numbers and crack the code. This scavenger hunt focuses on the first letter in CVC words - this is the sound of a letter that most children find easiest to hear and discriminate so is the easiest to decode and read. Most young children love a game where they are active and looking for things and this scavenger hunt will be a fun way to combine this and practicing key literacy skills. Easy-Prep - Print and cut up the words and pictures and hide them around your room and/ or outdoors. Set the scene by reading the short passage and explaining what students have to do and hand out the answer sheets with a pencil and clipboard. Players find the 10 different pictures (with numbers), read the words with letters, decide which is the correct spelling and match them to the pictures. They record the letters underneath the number (of the matching picture) on the answer sheet which will give them 3 words - the mystery code. You will get: • 10 pictures • 40 words - students choose the correct spelling - each picture has 4 spelling options. • Answer sheet 1 - record the letters of the correct spellings to find the mystery words • Answer sheet 2 - record the numbers for the given letters (a CVC word) to reveal the secret 3-digit code • Answers for quick assessment You will also get: • Notes • a short introduction to set the scene • answers for you to assess instantly if they are correct • winners’ certificates • directions & FAQ’s Great for you: • Low-prep • Ideal for your literacy centre • Great as an independent activity • Use them in child-initiated learning time • Ideal if you need a quick resource e.g. for substitute days • Great for extra reading practice Great for your students: • Gives students opportunities to read CVC words and focus on the middle (vowel) sounds • Encourages students to work together in pairs and groups • The challenge to crack the 3-digit code will engage them Make it more interesting by using a 3-digit lock and pre-setting the numbers to this code. Segmenting and Blending CVC Words Fun DICE Spelling Games

(0)
Looking for fun blending and segmenting games to spell CVC words? Get your (EYFS) reception children excited to practise early reading skills and say, segment, blend and make words with the letters on the dice to match the pictures. They will love these activities which will help them to recognise consonants and vowels and choose the correct ones to build the different words. Why choose dice rather than get pupils to write? Some children at this age may find writing tricky as they have not yet got the fine motor control to use a pencil accurately and can get frustrated easily, however we still want them to practice spelling. Building words using these dice makes ‘writing’, or spelling, fun. You can also use these as a Memory or Pairs game by printing the words and pictures and finding the pairs. Alternatively print out the words twice and match them. Use these games to revise and consolidate learning about blending and segmenting CVC words in fun ways. Pupils will become more confident and fluent in their spelling and reading. You will get: 3 games which have: • dice - 2 dice with consonants plus 2 vowel dice • words in colour with the middle vowel in black • words in colour with the middle vowel in black plus 3 dots under the 3 letters and arrows to show the direction of reading the word • words in in black and white to print directly to the back of the pictures for instant self-assessment. ( The words are ‘handed’ compared to the pictures so that you should be able to print this back-to-back with the pictures). • a table of which words are being used (Game 1 - 43 words, game 2 - 40 words, game 3 - 30 words. Please note that some words are used more than once). • instructions how to play the games - i.e. match the letters to the word or match the letters to the picture • teaching notes • patterns for the backs of words in case you would like to have a player read the word and the others spell this Great for you: • Ideal opportunity to assess and teach about blending and segmenting CVC words • Great as independent activities as part of a lesson • Great for your literacy/ reading centres • Use them for morning work • Ideal for fun homework • Use them for early finishers • Ideal for extra fun segmenting and spelling practice Great for your Pupils: • Popular to play & easy to understand activities • Great opportunities to learn together and discuss blending and segmenting with instant self-assessment If you like this resource, I would appreciate a review and thank you.
