7 life processes

7 life processes

(2)
I find a really good way of embedding the 7 life processes with pupils is to show them examples that could be confusing or do some of the processes such as an interactive tigger or a candle and get them to decide how many of the life processes they do, this sheet goes with such a demonstration, it can be adapted for EAL pupils by adding a picture that demonstrates that life process underneath the word for it

Adaptations

A simple worksheet activity that asks the pupils to get creative in designning a creature to survive in different types of conditions.

Henrietta Lacks, Immortality and ethics

(1)
part of a module i'm developing on Alchemy, there is more of this activity to come i'm developing a questions sheet to go with this activity. The search for Immortality was key in alchemy and Henriettas cells are immortal she has an interesting story which raises several ethical questions. This is a sheet containing her story which could be turned into a card sort activity, more to follow

Supernatural science medium term plan

(5)
A medium term plan i made for a topic on the science of the supernatural, with pupils fascination with horror films and the popularity of true blood and twilight i thought it would be an engaging way to deliver some of the KS3 objectives
Investigation keywords

Investigation keywords

(0)
a worksheet of keywords we use when carrying out science investigations, it asks pupils to write a definition of what those words mean in science
using DNA to identify victims

using DNA to identify victims

(0)
a cut and stick activity where pupils sequence the process used to identify the victims of natural disasters like the asian tsunami, helps pupils realise the importance of science
New Crime Scence Science

New Crime Scence Science

(1)
Written this year, inlcudes some victim identification material and works on the crime scene having a coded message (like the zodiac killer), a muddy footprint and a severed arm and then later on another crime scene with a knife and some bones from another victim. I used coded messages to link the crime scenes and taunt the pupils as the killer but simple messages could be left instead, i tried to link in some victim support material as well to give a link to citizenship and the impact of crime, i will give more details by email through the TES if desired
Burke and hare

Burke and hare

(2)
A good opening to investigating science and CSI type projects, looks at the murders committed by burke and hare and has a sorting out worksheet for their story, once pupils have sorted the cards out you can remove some of them and get them to reproduce parts of the story to see what they have learnt there is also pictures of old medical instruments for them to guess how they were used and a section of pictures for them to make posters on the history of anatomy.
Phrenology

Phrenology

(1)
looks at the science of phrenology once believed in and now dismissed use the first sheet as a starter, then introduce ideas of phrenology to pupils and get them to measure each other and see if they have any criminal characteristics has great links to citizenship as you can discuss whether it is fair to label people on looks alone.
Family trees and evolution

Family trees and evolution

(1)
I designed this as a interview lesson but it works as part of the OCR twenty first century science module on life on earth as well. you start with the pictures of a real family tree and look for similarities before moving on to look at darwins finches and his work and the development of phylogenetic trees. It's a good springboard into a discussion about how DNA evidence supports the theory of evolution and can then extend into darwins work, my extension sheet included has an excerpt from the origin of the species describing the finches
Lifecycle of a chicken

Lifecycle of a chicken

(2)
A powerpoint that could be used for environmental and land based science or for use with the living eggs project at Secondary school, it starts simply with the lifecyle of a chick and then goes on to look a little at ethics, so the differences between battery and free range and whether it's ok to kill and eat chickens, it will need some tweaking to make suitable for different classes it is pitched at quite a high level
Crime scene Science

Crime scene Science

(20)
Crime scene projects designed by me that can be easily adapted for any school. Could be used for additional science/BTEC forensics. There are background stories for them that i will happily share with anyone interested in them.
Science of star wars

Science of star wars

(3)
a fun end of term activity where pupils choose a planet or moon from the star wars universe and complete a series of challenges based on their chosen planet or moon - all challenges are the same but the choice of planet can make the tasks easier or harder - my pupils loved this :) - all resources needed are included in the powerpoint i used moylmods and lego for the building challenges
