Do you need a really good writing example to inspire your pupils?
These opening paragraphs for creative writing sessions (or for homework) include well structured sentences. They are ideal for Year 5 and 6 children - and KS3. The secret/hidden messages focus will engage writers and should initiate some good class discussions.
Three openers are included. Each includes a version that can be easily cut out and stuck in their books, and a version that can be completed on the sheet in class or for homework.
The three starters are titled…
1. Invisible
2. Gone
3. The Book
This grid has 32 first lines for creative writing - suitable for KS2 children.
Every child could be given a different story start or they could be given more than one to use somewhere in their story.
These are open ended and give the children lots of possibilities. They avoid the children using a generic start and encourage them to grab the reader’s attention straight away.
This grid was created in MS Word so you can easily edit it.

Excerpt:
TASK 1 – A Letter to His Brother
As Benjamin Briggs, you decide to write a letter to your bother – Oliver. Like you he has also invested all of his money into a ship. His ship is called Julia A. Hallock. Both brothers had considered retiring as captains and thought about going into business together. In hindsight this was a mistake, but at the moment Benjamin Briggs is looking forward to the journey he is about to make - even if he is a little worried about the ‘curse’ on his ship.
Make sure that think about the following things:.
a. Think about how to set out an informal letter.
b. Explain why you are writing.
Each activity includes advice to help the children improve the quality of their writing.
