As Head of Dance at Horizon Community College I have rewritten lots of SOW, resources and other bits and bobs. These might be really useful to people who are short on time or need some guidance/inspiration for the new BTEC TECH course/ developing ks3 SOW
This is the first ppt in a set of mini mock ppts that i am going to send to my y10 during lockdown. It is designed to develop skills for comp 3 and replicate the process a little
This is an activity designed for students to work from home. I have set my y9 the challenge of completing 1 per week but you could challenge students to complete a line or full house.
Adaptable so you can change the tasks on here to anything else.
This is a complete bundle that will help to support students in the first Phase of COMPONENT 3.
The pack includes an exam launch introducing the theme, marking criteria and potential inspiration and ideas. It also includes an initial workshop to explore the stimulus set for 2019.
In addition the pack includes a motif development lesson for students to start to build and track their ideas- many of my students had got 1 mins worth of material from this lesson alone.
A storyboarding lesson allows students to develop the motifs created and to start to formulate ideas about set/props/music/dancers needed for each section.
To complete the pack I have included a theory lesson so that students can prepare for their IDEAS LOG written task, this includes a slide that can be printed A3 for them to bulletpoint their ideas for the task. And a template to practise on.
This is the first lesson in a Dance Vocabulary SOW, particularly useful for y7. It involves using Dance by Chance to create short sequences whilst learning key words.
This ppt is designed to be a first lesson for BTEC students starting on the BTEC TECH award with a DANCE APPROACH. It features:
Dancer profile DO NOW task- this gives students a chance to give some information about themselves and reflections on their preferences- lovely as a way to allow teachers to build understanding of their class.
Space for Routines for practical and theory lessons which can be tweaked to fit your own.
A breakdown of the three components
An explanation of Assignment briefs
A look at the criteria and how this gives an overall grade.
An overview of how the final grade is calculated
A task for students to complete a 3 phase independant/partner warm up to be used in practical lessons and workshops.
This resource is a full SOW for a unit that has worked really well with our y9 students, it is 7 weeks long and includes
Full written SOW
INTRO to DANCE lesson that can be tweaked used to create warmup and go through expectations
PPT for each lesson
Embedded videos/workshop examples
DO NOW tasks, PROGRESS and PROGRESS+ Tasks
DIRT self evaluation lesson

This resource has been used most successfully with our current y8/9 students. It is a SOW at desks so classroom based but with fun activities for students to take part it with some movement at desks in some tasks.
The SOW explores the following
Lesson 1- Stylistic Features of professional repertoire.
Lesson 2- Dance skills
Lesson 3- Types of Stimuli
Lesson 4- Responding to a brief
Lesson 5- Interactive Quiz
Lessons can be split as there is a lot of content, lesson 3 and 4 inparticular you could spread across 2 lessons each making a longer SOW
The bundle also features a knowledge organiser that students can use for home learning and there is a DO NOW task students can complete in books at the start of each lesson.
Any Questions about delivery please email jHunt@horizoncc.co.uk
This resource is a homework pack that i distributed to my learners over the half term. It gives them a brief and a written example , as well as some information on the physical skills to complete a physical skills audit. The work students produced was excellent and much more detailed as a result of this resource.
This resource is lesson 1 in a 5 Soldiers SOW useful mainly for COMPONENT 1 on the BTEC TECH award but stands alone for any other curriculum years too.
Lesson 1 explores the first section of 5 soldiers and includes a creative task for students to complete as part of a workshop.
This resource features a planning sheet and an accompanying ppt to prepare students for the Component 3 Ideas Log exam.
The ppt talks students through a PIE structure to enhance the detail in student responses and features a fun peer assessment feature.
The planning sheet also includes a structured page for students to add their bulletpoints to in preparation for the exam.
This Rosas Danst Rosas bundle includes ppt resources and sheets needed for an engaging set of practical and theory based lessons. This has worked wonderfully for our KS4 BTEC students during the COVID restrictions and is perfect for social distancing. It could however be a really fantastic SOW for KS3.
The full Rosas Danst Rosas site specific filmed piece is available to watch on Youtube if you search Rosas Danst Rosas and the links on the ppt go directly to the Rosas Remixed tutorials.
The SOW also features an opportunity for students to look at the Beyonce Plagiarism scandal and create a piece mirroring Rosas to the Beyonce track which students have LOVED
This resource features an exam PPT launch that is used with y10/11 drama and dance students, it has a breakdown of the criteria, top tips for the exam, an introduction to the stimulus for 2020 as well as a few practical ideas for pieces that we feel would meet the criteria fully, the ppt justifies how the ideas would hit each element of the brief.
The ppt also comes with a breakdown of the combination of grades to achieve overall scores so students can see how their result for comp 3 could effect their overall grade.
In addition to the PPT there is a student booklet for COMPONENT 3, this features the following pages:
Breakdown of criteria and theme brief.
Local Community mindmap of areas to consider.
Mind map page
Pitch page for students to formulate an idea for a piece that they can share with their group.
Final group idea page with space to justify how the idea meets each section of the brief.
A scene/section planning table to note down the structure of their piece scene by scene.
Rehearsal logs x8 to log what they are working on, targets and actions for the next rehearsals.
Techniques grid to allow them to tick off and make notes when devising for dance- this could be easily adapted to fit dramatic techniques instead
Verbal feedback log
Choreographic devices page with information to help students when devising/developing.
Technique and motif development posters (on a seperate document)
This resource was created for teaching y8 and 9 dance students in classrooms. The choreography was modified and performed sat at desks but this could be quite easily used in a studio where students can dance more freely. The first couple of lessons and the moodboard resources are here, you can access the other lessons in my store.
I created this for my students studying COMPONENT 3 on the BTEC TECH award. It is just a really simple way for them to record ideas as they rehearse etc and then when they complete the skills log they can refer to this when creating their notes. The concept links to BLANK CANVAS-just for fun, so they use all the blank space on the blank canvas to write down their ideas and then at the end of the lesson reflect using the questions in the paint splatters.
This resource is for the beginning of the second phase of the Component 3 exam. I wanted to get my students thinking about different methods/techniques they could use to create more material-something that they will need to write about in their SKILLS LOG which will come in a few weeks time.
The lesson encourages groups to try 2 out of the 4 suggested techniques for coming up with choreography/creating. This could EASILY be changed to 4 drama techniques/musical theatre techniques or even production techniques if needed .
The ppt includes a creation canvas slide that i have printed out A3 for my students to. track their ideas/findings on. The resource also comes with a personal management SKILLS log that i am going to get them to fill out quickly each lesson- this will track their progress/contributions to the process which again they will need to write about in their SKILLS LOG.
This is a template that i gave to students as part of their studies on 5 Soldiers. There is a storyboard complete with 8 key scenes in the production. Students must watch the live feed performance and describe the movement, set, lighting and costume in each scene.
This allows them to meet the Component 1 Criteria in exploring the features of the piece and how costume, set, lighting and movement choices contribute to the overall piece.
A help sheet is included with an example for each section and some helpful tips.
A ppt to launch the 2020 BTEC TECH Component 3 theme with grade breakdowns, top tips and some practical examples and helpful ideas to get started.
The ppt also features a breakdown of overall grades so students can understand the importance of component 3 to their overall grade.
