I am an English teacher with several years experience of working in 6th forms. I was recommended by my Head of Department to share my resources on TES after he consistently praised my lessons and schemes of work for how easy they are for teachers to use and access them. I pride myself on my planning, and make sure each slide of each lesson is aesthetically pleasing, with a clear title, main task, and usually an extension task.

A whole SoW for teaching Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, aimed at Edexcel’s Literature spec, including two lessons outlining key context. These lessons were planned to be at comparing with The Handmaid’s Tale, but can be easily adapted for other specs if needed. There are two or three chapters covered in each lesson, with a focus on extract analysis, literary terms, and contextual links reinforced throughout (such as how Shelley’s writing fits in to other Romantic writing). Most lessons end with a slide to consider three links to The Handmaid’s Tale. The slides consist of a clear title, main task, and extension task, and have a variety of tasks in each lesson - engaging starters, discussion, group work, quote finding, extract analysis, and evaluative plenaries.

A full scheme of work for teaching Tennessee William’s A Streetcar Named Desire at English Literature. Includes two context lessons, two lessons on Scenes 1 and 3 and then one lesson per scene for the rest. Activities include quote finding, extract analysis, discussion tasks, group work, and evaluative plenaries. The lessons invite students to analyse the text as a play rather than just a written text by linking to the conventions of a tragedy, dramatic techniques, and stagecraft. A complete scheme of work to teach Jean Rhys’ Wide Sargasso Sea. Each file contains 2 lessons (as I have been teaching double periods!) and each lesson contains a starter, plenary and 3-4 tasks, each with an extension task. Links to Jane Eyre are also made throughout. There are 4 lessons in there comparing to Seamus Heaney’s ‘North’ as that is what we are comparing WSS to, but the vast majority of the lessons just focus on WSS. A complete Scheme of Work (15 lessons) to teach A Streetcar Named Desire, aimed towards the English Language and Literature spec. This SoW will teach the entirety of the play, looking at characters, themes, and context, and analysing linguistic and dramatic features, such as spoken language features, word/sentence types, and conventions of a tragedy. A complete scheme of work to teach the Metaphysical poems from the Edexcel English Literature spec. There are 17 lessons in total, including a context lesson, assessment lesson, and mock exam prep lesson. All poems are in the powerpoint. There is a lesson on overall context, as well as key context for each poet in relevant lessons. Each lesson has homework questions to prep students for the poem in the next lesson. These, as well as the main tasks, will allow the poems to be analysed in detail, with oppportunities for evaluative discussions.

These lessons should be pretty much ready to go, meaning you shouldn’t need to tweak them too much. I try to make my slides as clear and aesthetically pleasing as possible. A complete scheme of work to teach Seamus Heaney’s collection ‘North’. Each lesson is designed for a double period, so this is a 28 lesson SoW. There is also one essay prep lesson. The first lesson covers context of the history of Ireland, The Troubles, and Heaney’s life. Each lesson contains attractive slides, clear instructions, and exentsion tasks on every slide. I taught this to compare with Jean Rhys’ Wide Sargasso Sea, but any slides linked to this can be easily removed - it does not impact the teaching of the poems.
