I am an English teacher with several years experience of working in 6th forms. I was recommended by my Head of Department to share my resources on TES after he consistently praised my lessons and schemes of work for how easy they are for teachers to use and access them. I pride myself on my planning, and make sure each slide of each lesson is aesthetically pleasing, with a clear title, main task, and usually an extension task.

Jekyll and Hyde full SoW English Literature GCSE

(0)
A 20 lesson scheme of work for teaching The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde for English Literature GCSE. The two assessment questions used are from AQA. This full SoW covers the text in detail, opening with a context lesson. It encourages students to look at extracts from the text throughout. The scheme of work ends with lessons recapping context, characters, themes, structure, and motifs. Every slide has clear titles, instructions, often an eye catching relevant image, and a ‘challenge’ extension task. Every lesson has a simple starter and plenary. This would probably be aimed at a higher set but the instructions are clear and could be adapted for a mid set.

Heaney 'North' complete SoW A Level poetry

(0)
A complete scheme of work to teach Seamus Heaney’s collection ‘North’. Each lesson is designed for a double period, so this is a 28 lesson SoW. There is also one essay prep lesson. The first lesson covers context of the history of Ireland, The Troubles, and Heaney’s life. Each lesson contains attractive slides, clear instructions, and exentsion tasks on every slide. I taught this to compare with Jean Rhys’ Wide Sargasso Sea, but any slides linked to this can be easily removed - it does not impact the teaching of the poems. Check out my other resources and schemes of work for English Literature and/or Language! Poems from ‘North’ covered are: Antaeus Funeral Rites North Bog Queen The Grauballe Man Punishment Strange Fruit Act of Union Hercules and Antaeus Whatever you say, say nothing Ministry of Fear A Constable Calls Orange Drums Summer 1969 Exposure

Wide Sargasso Sea/Jane Eyre intro BUNDLE

2 Resources
Contains: 4 lessons covering Jane Eyre and the character of Bertha A complete scheme of work to teach Wide Sargasso Sea Each lesson contains starter, plenary, and 3-4 main tasks, most slides containing an extension tasks. Page references refer to the Penguin classic edition. There are a few lessons comparing to Seamus Heaney’s ‘North’, but these do not infringe on simply teaching the novel as a whole. These lessons should be pretty much ready to go, meaning you shouldn’t need to tweak them too much. I try to make my slides as clear and aesthetically pleasing as possible. Check out my other English Literature/Language/Lang Lit resources!

Wide Sargasso Sea/Jane Eyre intro lessons

4 lessons which will introduce students to the main themes and ideas of Jane Eyre, as an introduction to Wide Sargasso Sea. The lessons are all in one document; they ‘look like’ 2 lessons, but were planned to be taught over 2 double periods, so there is enough content for 4 lessons. Also included is a worksheet for students to fill in, relevant extracts from Jane Eyre, and wider interpretations of what Bertha could represent in Jane Eyre. Check out my full scheme of work for Wide Sargasso Sea as well!

Wide Sargasso Sea complete SoW A Level KS5 English

(2)
A complete scheme of work to teach Jean Rhys’ Wide Sargasso Sea. Each file contains 2 lessons (as I have been teaching double periods!) and each lesson contains a starter, plenary and 3-4 tasks, each with an extension task. Links to Jane Eyre are also made throughout. There are 4 lessons in there comparing to Seamus Heaney’s ‘North’ as that is what we are comparing WSS to, but the vast majority of the lessons just focus on WSS. Page references refer to the Penguin Classics edition. See also my WSS/Jane Eyre introductory lessons, giving a quick overview of Jane Eyre to allow greater understanding of WSS.

Edexcel Voices Anthology complete SoW Lang-Lit A Level

(0)
These are 20 lessons to teach the 20 Voices anthology texts for Paper 1 of the Edexcel Language and Literature A Level. Each lesson is designed to be taught over a double period, so this is essentially 40 lessons! There is context for each text/writer, and tasks to examine genre/audience/purpose, tone, text conventions, and other features more specific to the text. The second text of each genre is also encouraged to be compared with the first (i.e. so you compare both articles in the final articles lesson) The research might require students to go online - perhaps on phone or laptop. Enjoy!

English Literature Timeline of the Novel A Level KS5

(0)
This document provides a timeline of some key novels written over the last 300 years, with their titles, what makes them significant, and how novel writing as a whole has changed and developed. The idea is for students to be able to see the novels that they are studying in context - what other novels were written at the time, and how are they similar or different to what came before and after? This is not a lesson as such but a starting point for further research, discussion, and evalution.
Handmaid's Tale Postmodernism Historical Notes

Handmaid's Tale Postmodernism Historical Notes

(0)
This is four lessons (in one document) which helps students understand Postmodernism, and applies this in detail to the ‘Historical Notes’ section of The Handmaid’s Tale. First, students look at 3 poems to explore Victorian, Modernist, and Postmodern themes. They also look at how painting styles have changed over the centuries to less realistic and more abstract forms. They also consider the relative reliability of different ways of researching the past. The Historical Notes is then broken up into 6 sections, with specific questions linking to Postmodernism for each section. Finally, other theories (such as Marxism and Feminism) are used to analyse the text through different lenses. See my complete SoW on The Handmaid’s Tale for more useful lessons!
