Year 5 Addition and Subtraction Unit
A ten lesson sequence focusing on addition and subtraction in Year 5.
Most lessons come as double lessons with two single lessons as introductions ahead of the double lessons that follow them.
The lesson sequence is as follows:
Lesson 1 - Written Addition
Lesson 2 and 3 - Written and Mental Addition
Lesson 4 - Written Subtraction
Lesson 5 and 6 - Written and Mental Subtraction
Lesson 7 and 8 - Choosing most appropriate method for addition and subtraction
Lesson 9 and 10 - Inverse operations and finding missing numbers in calculations
Each lesson/ double lesson includes PowerPoints which include arithmetic starters for every lesson, key vocabulary, teaching, discussion and practise before moving on to the independent activity and challenge questions. Over a double lesson, the activity and challenge task remain the same as it gives children chance to go in depth in both the teaching in the first lesson and through the challenge questions in the second lesson. Answer sheets are included for all activities and challenges.
Year 5 Four Operations - Multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000 Double Lesson
A double lesson for Year 5 that focuses on children being able to multiply whole numbers by 10, 100 or 1000.
Included is a double lesson PowerPoint that includes an arithmetic starter for each lesson, key vocabulary, discussion points and practices. There is then an activity that includes an answer sheet and challenge questions for anyone that finishes with answers again included.
Year 5 Four Operations - Multiplying and Dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 Double Lesson
A double lesson for Year 5 that focuses on children being able to multiply and divide whole numbers by 10, 100 or 1000 with whole number answers.

Year 5 Four Operations - Written Multiplication Lesson
A single lesson for Year 5 that focuses on recapping written multiplication of a 3-digit number by a 1-digit number ahead of then going further with written multiplication in future lessons.
Included in the resource is a lesson PowerPoint that includes an arithmetic starter, key vocabulary, models and discussions as well as practice tasks before moving on to the independent activity and challenge questions. Answer sheets are included for both the activity and challenge questions.
A multiplication grid is also included to support where necessary.

A double lesson for Year 5 that focuses on children being able to use written multiplication for 4-digit numbers multipled by a 1-digit number.

Year 5 Four Operations - Written Division Lessons with remainders in context (x4)
Two double lessons that focus on securing the concept of written division in Year 5 using a written method and using remainders in context.
The first double lesson focuses on being able to continue practising using written division with 4-digit numbers divided by 1-digit as well as looking at being able to apply remainders in a context where they need to either add another group on or remove the remainder to get the answer.
The second double lesson then continues to provide the chance to practise written division as well as then looking at remainders in terms of money and measurement and being able to create a decimal answer.
Included in both sets of double lessons are a double lesson PowerPoint that includes an arithmetic starter for each lesson, key vocabulary, discussion points and practices. There is then an activity that includes an answer sheet and challenge questions for anyone that finishes with answers again included.

A double lesson for Year 4 Place Value with children working on being able to round to the nearest 100 with the focus being on 3-digit numbers and 4-digit numbers where it is most appropriate.

Number Bonds to 10
A 200 page presentation with a question per page focusing on number bonds to 10.
These are presented in a number of different ways, including counting colour counters and saying how many there are altogether, filling in missing numbers on different part-whole models, writing addition and subtraction facts for the numbers given, filling in missing numbers in part-part-whole models and even linking number bonds to 10 to solve number bonds to 100 with multiples of 10.
These can be used either as questions to do as a class or to print and get children to work through at different points.
Back to School Activities
A range of activities that can be used as part of welcoming a new class in.
Included is:
An all about me activity sheet - there are two versions of this with one being a colour background and one being plain white if needed for printing.
A someone who has/ can activity - A bingo style activity of trying to find a different individual for each box of what they have done, can do or have. This again comes with a colour background or white background for printing purposes.
A birthday activity - Each month is included with children needing to find out other birthdays in the class to record appropriately in each month.
Favourite activity, pet and snacks activities - These are three different data collection activities that provide the opportunity to find out favourite pets, snacks and activities, collecting this data as a tally chart. This is then followed up with a bar chart activity where children can practise applying the data to a graphic representation.
Year 3 Addition and Subtraction - 3-digit + 2-digit Lesson (carrying tens)
A fully-resourced lesson aimed at the Year 3 objective based on being able to add a 2-digit number to a 3-digit number where some carrying is needed.
Included is a lesson PowerPoint that includes an arithmetic starter, key vocabulary, modelling and discussion as well as guided practice. This then moves on to an independent activity and challenge questions, with answers included for these.

6x Tables Activities (30 activities)
30 different activities linked to the 6x table that give the opportunity to work on and improve understanding of the 6x table facts in different ways.
This includes activities that range from list questions that help show commutativity, inverse and multiples of 10, 0.1 etc., filling in tables that require children to make links between different facts, completing sequences that link to the ability to count in 6s and using written multiplication and division using facts from the 6x table. Additionally, there are tasks linked to fractions in simplifying fractions, finding fractions of amounts, multiplying and dividing fractions by whole numbers and multiplying a fraction by a fraction. There are also activities looking at number sentences from given facts including commutative and inverse, representations and always, sometimes, never.
Answers are also included for every activity in a separate booklet.
Year 3 Addition and Subtraction - 3-digit - 2-digit Lesson (exchanging)
A fully-resourced lesson aimed at the Year 3 objective based on being able to subtract a 2-digit number from a 3-digit number where exchanging/ renaming is needed.
