“I Love You, Mum - I Promise I Won’t Die” is a poignant verbatim play that narrates the tragic tale of 16-year-old Daniel Spargo-Mabbs, who lost his life after consuming MDMA during a night out with friends. The play derives its name from Daniel’s last words to his mother just before he left home, infusing it with an eerie yet touching quality. While sharing thematic similarities with Wheeller’s other works, this play stands out as it elegantly weaves the words of Daniel’s family and friends into its narrative, rendering it emotionally resonant and unforgettable.
The genesis of the play can be traced back to Dan’s drama teacher, Izzy Forrester, who approached his parents with the idea that utilizing the medium of drama, which held a special place in Dan’s heart, could serve as a compelling means to convey his story to other young individuals.
