The Tunnel by Anthony Browne is a fantastic resource written for guided reading sessions that use a carousel format. Planning included teacher questioning as well as comprehension for children to access independently. Excellent text to use because Week 1 Guided questions and activities are also available in the shop. The following unit includes the following:- Teacher looking, clue, thinking questioning planning Work on high order vocabulary like alternatives for verb ‘said’ Alliteration and commas in a list Response activities to promote deeper understanding of characters Used to teach children high order questioning during guided reading session. There are opportunities to develop and explore characters thoughts, feelings, emotions and motivations through dialogue and speech. Vocabulary is enhanced through extending vocabulary through description and alliteration. This is an excellent information planning 'All About Whales'. The inspiration for this was from the book the Snail and the Whales by Julia Donaldson. It's a boy friendly text and the children got to keep African snails in the classroom. Leading on from this they learnt an exemplar text about whales, imitated it and then innovated to write their own information text about snails. This unit was linked to grammar features from the new curriculum 2017- 18 for Year 2. It includes using targets to develop use of expanded noun phrases, conjunctions and varied openers. Children structured their writing according to the purpose using headings as questions. The resource includes six weeks of planning, a text map, exemplar text, tool boxing ideas and visuals to support the imitation stage. This is a fantastic way to include a dinosaur topic in your English unit. The resource contains an exemplar text (Instructions) with visuals aimed at the Exceeding in EYFS or Working at in year 1. The children are introduced to the story first - Harry and the bucket full of dinosaurs. It then leads on to learning instructional exemplar text (imitate) about 'How to take care of a pet dino.' This is supported by a text map to sequence and internalise language. The grammar features included are time connectives and prepositional language. The exemplar text is differentiated for SEN or EAL learners who may have little English, or limited writing ability. The unit lends itself well to imitation, innovation and invention. The children may go onto writing instructions for 'How to care for yourself ' or 'How to get ready in the morning.' They may write instructiins about caring for a class pet. There are lots of opportunities to do cross curricular and independent writing opportunities from this book e.g. my first day shopping. Excellent text for relluctant boy writers. ENJOY.

Writing a riddle in year 2 is fun. This resource teaches children how to write riddles about snails and whales. It is linked to the story The snail and the whale by Julia Donaldson. This resource is fun and flexible to use. The supporting materials can easily be adapted to write a riddle about any creature. HAPS children are challenged with high expectations by using coordinating conjunction ‘but’ when writing a clue - e.g I have a foot but I don’t have any legs. I’m a good swimmer but I’m not a fish. An excellent, fun and imaginative play linked to the Great Fire of London. It is an end of year Play/Production or Assembly. This play script an be used as a finale to the history topic great fire of London taught in year 2. It is mainly about the historical event although there are other parts with gingerbread men (getting baked in the bakery and 3 little pigs) to give it a modern and contemporary twist (which links to traditional stories with a twist in year 2). The script includes a subtle twist and incorporates characters from fairy tales because traditional stories is also taught in year 2. However, it can be easily adapted if need be to make parts shorter or longer depending on the cohort. It was originally used to cater for a 4 form entry. There are at least 40 speaking parts and other parts for singers and dancers to allow for 120 parts. Again if you are a small school, then all the children can participate in the dances or singing as opposed to small groups. The play is designed so that it can be used in isolation even if you haven’t taught GFOL this year. The resource includes a play script, lyrics for home, links to songs, You tube links with songs, dancing list, costume list, stage directions. All you need to finish of the year after SATs. Enjoy.

KS1 Narrative Unit on Pirates and Mermaids. Year 2 and Year 1 English Curriculum. This has been adapted to suit year 1 children or year 2 children who are working below the expected standard (SEN or EAL). The unit is designed to help children repeat, pre-teach vocabulary, over teach sentence structure, match words, sort sentences into order and sequence, play vocabulary games, and much more. It should allow children for improved independence by the end of the unit. Africa Topic Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters- A play script about an African Tale. Are you learning about Africa? Have you focused on learning a text in a different cultural setting? If so, this is the perfect and inspirational play script for you. It includes parts for 120 (a four form entry school), although this can be easily adapted, altered and edited. The resource includes relevant songs within an African setting including popular and contemporary songs that will add and enliven the show. These have been carefully selected according to the theme in each scene e.g envy, jealousy, beauty, king’s procession etc. There are clear guidance for props, staging and costumes that may be suitable for parents/carers or teachers to provide. English writing unit for year 2 and year 3 This resources supports independent writing of a narrative unit. Children read the book and plan how the main character returns home after learning her lesson about friendship and disloyalty. Children plan, invent and edit in this unit of work. there are lots on visuals and grammar features included to ensure that the Year 2 ITAFS are met. It can be easily adapted for year 3 also. A very entertaining book that will engage all readers. Grammar features include - practicing speech and alternative verbs for said. Practicing using suffix endings -ment, -less, -ness, -er, -est. Pupils write at length and improve stamina for writing. They develop characters and settings through description and dialogue. The story supports pupils to show good v evil characters in their writing.

Year 2 Science Curriculum - Plants This is an interesting lesson demonstrating how to set up an experiment to observe plants growing over time. The P details which vegetables and scraps are suitable to use. It shows how to set up the experiment and includes photographic examples of the scraps that do grow into new plants. Suitable for year 2 and year 1. Children can have fun bringing in scraps from home, such as potato cuttings with a node, carrot heads, celery, spring onion cutting from base, and even a pineapple head etc.

Remote Learning English Writing Tasks This resource has been designed to support parents and teachers because it sets the same task for all pupils for their writing. It is suitable for all pupils across the school and the teachers can vary the success criteria for them. The outcomes will vary according to the age and ability of the child. Pupils can even work together with siblings and share ideas during this difficult times. Year 2 Maths Measures - Reading scales using a thermometer and solving problems with temperature. This activity involves solving problems with temperature, including temperature increase and decrease. The children write a simple equation to show their working out, and then show the answer on the thermometer provided in degrees. Children must have prior knowledge, using and reading a real thermometer e.g to check and read the temperature of indoor space or outdoor space. They should handle thermometers and try to take a reading in different places to see how the temperature drops or increases. This activity supports the new greater depth and mastery curriculum in YR2.

Year 2 Maths - Symmetry This is a fabulous bundle of resources to teach symmetry in Year 2, using 2d regular and irregular shapes. Children first investigate how many lines of symmetry each shape has. They sort them in order one line of symmetry, 2 lines of symmetry or 3 or more lines of symmetry etc. They then move onto reasoning with symmetry in 2d shapes and prove true or false statements such as - do all 4 sided shapes have four lines of symmetry. They show their understanding using APE it- Answer it, prove it and explain it. Following that, children sort shapes into a carrol diagram with given criteria to show a secure understanding of symmetry. The powerpoint have several examples to embed learning with shapes and how to find line of symmetry. Children working below the expected level can find and sort into symmetrical and asymmetrical objects. 3 days of detailed planning and visual materials- support EAL and SEn learners. Year 1 and 2 SPAG. The all important suffix endings display for the grammar washing line in the classroom. This is a very eye-catching and visual way to display all the suffixes that the children need to be able to spell and use accurately in their writing to secure working at the expected standard. The suffixes are written in bubble writing and have the common suffix ending words written inside them. They will make an excellent and immediate display. Year 2 Non Fiction Writing This is 14 page slide powerpoint with apt information about how to write about snails. It includes subheadings for body, eats, habitat, dangers. it gives children enough information about snails so they can research and then write their own information text about how to keep pet snails. This encourages children to apply their learning to a new context. Ideal for a topic unit in science and suitable for keeping pet African snails in class. Otherwise it can be used for English literacy non fiction unit. The text includes suitable sentence level work to incorporate year 2 grammar features such as coordinating and subordinating conjunctions.
