For GCSE students of English language to revise and practise their skills.
Start with basic summaries and ease into what Paper 2, Question 2 requires. With examples and extra exam-style tasks, this booklet makes a great 1.5-2hr session with or for homework.
It covers the main elements of the summary question and has a number of tasks to complete as well as an exam-style summative task.
A focus on Alliteration, Consonance, Assonance & Sibilance and the effects and importance of such features. Help your students to understand the reason for using these features and they will surely begin to use them effectively within their own writing.
Give them an undertanding of repeptitive features that will inspire perceptive responses to AO2 questions!
Preparation for language analysis and scope to push more advanced learners. With embedded Storm video for a feature creation task, an exam-style summative assessment task and step-by-step/click-by-click animations…
This is a three hour set of sessional activities with a glossary page and marking criteria that could easily be extended and streched out. The PPT works, hand-in-hand, with the booklet and it would be a good idea to pilot the delivery as the animation work click-by-click/step-by-step.
This was originally created for resit students which is why it’s in such a condensed format and has an exam-style task on contraception.
Hope you find it useful!
DETAILED & HEAVILY ANIMATED!
This 28 SLIDE ppt & handout have been designed to be visually impressive… the graphics were a joy to put together.
Heavily animated and laden with activities covering AO1-3 - this action-packed set of 3-4hrs worth of sessions consists of:
introductory/formative/summative tasks,
embedded videos for use without the need for the internet - animated into images of retro and modern hand-held gaming consoles,
and has some quite accessible texts from which to produce some great answers.
Has a 1970s arcade advert and a 1990s one. Really nice to compare.
The set leads nicely into a Question 5 resource I put together on Gaming & Grammar. See my shop for a discounted bundle!
Updated - Animations had been stripped…they’re now back…
Take your AS/A level Eng Lang students through the ages via this quite detailed 2-3hr session. Visually pleasing and videos, embedded for ease of use, are also placed into an old TV Set template. It adds a bit of charm to it but is just a gimmick.
My students made notes from slides but all images are of good enough quality to print if you right click them and save as image. I used some of them to make a display with students but they created a giant timeline on a wall with craft materials.
Any feedback will be welcomed as it was my first year and some of my students did well so it would be good to improve and update.
There is a text extract in this from a school shooting incident…be warned - covers sensitive issues.
This covers basic word classes and Metaphor/Simile. It is laced with activities and tasks as well as images and a really short video clip of moving clouds which will hopefully prompt simile creation.
Prepped for a 3hr class with some interesting texts and questions. There is an example analysis and mark schemes included.
All images from pixabay.com where all images and videos are free to use - no questions asked - even for commercial purposes.
Now with accompanying PPT file!
For GCSE English Language Students to practise their skills of making inferences. There is a structural focus relating to Paper 1 - Question 3. It goes over the main elements of the question and has a number of tasks which relate to varied elements of narrative structure.
This set of Evaluation sessions can last 4-5 sessions and covers Q4 in some detail. It icludes an intro session and a number of embedded video clips, discussions prompts, examples and mark schemes, mini tasks, extensions and exam-style questions and timers.
Now with accompanying PPT file! Can be used as a session or homework.
This is for GCSE English Language Students to practise their skills in general evaluation and then the exam question. With a number of formative tasks and exam-style questions.
There are a few texts to explore and these are great for 1:1 tuition.
Train students to make rational predictions based on fictional expositions, in practice for Paper 1 - Question 3.
Begin with a fictional exposition. Then note down all the symbolic ideas within. Following this, make a reasonable prediction about what might be foreshadowed by the writer. FInally, make as many comments as you can about the significance this has to the entire plot and how it will affect the reader via creating interest/intrigue.
Foreshadowed clues to future events are in a great many novels…these, like Steinbeck’s famous novella, are often teleological.
Writing about them can get some big marks for your students! =-)
Take a look at my brief session on this - with another one of these sheets included:

I have a smashing set of these for sale in my shop - covering both papers.
This set is just Paper 1 - Section A and can only be printed single-sided. Also a card matching exercise once laminated and cut up. Brilliant Christmas starter.
Essentially 8 reading micro-mocks using famous Christmas songs. Mince pie week makes me cringe so I try to do workshops as a lot don’t turn up!
Enjoy! And, if you like, consider purchasing my full set:

This session covers language analysis - briefly - and guides through a triangulated answer using an older
Use for a quick practice session or as an intro session to analysing language with a greades 4-5 (level 3) mark scheme.
There is also a Guided Triangulation Worksheet. It helps train students to triangulate and embed their evidence and link all 3 quotations to the same main point.
Writing more sophisticatedly as a result, they will gain more marks as it will be more perceptive than a standard set of PEE paragraphs…
There is also an example answer but focused on a different text. I find it best not to use a direct example. Some just copy and paraphrase but with this, they really have to confront the difference as well; it also shows a good detailed paragraph.
Hope you find it useful! Please leave some feedback either way.
